I’d be inclined to agree and I also think that in part my medication working is a placebo effect in that it’s me taking control and doing something to help myself, taking steps to get better

It’s helped me a lot but not magically cured me of course. It’s like, medicine helps me to see more clearly and rationally so I can be aware of my problems, my obsessions and compulsions and intrusive thoughts, definitely helps my brain stop moving at the speed of light, helps with panic attacks, helps me to not lie to myself/others in a way where I used to run from my problems. Like I don’t think I could get anywhere in therapy if I wasn’t on medicine bc I’m more aware and awake on medicine. I also was suicidal my whole childhood and teen years so I have major depressive disorder too and crazy self loathing and guilt, so it’s helped a lot with my depression. There’s definitely side effects but not in a way that makes the ocd worse or more dangerous, it just takes a little trial and error on the pharmaceutical merry-go-round to find what meds are best for you and cause the least side effects. So don’t ever expect meds to be an overnight cure, it takes about a year minimum to reach a happy spot because you have to be on a med for at least 3 months for it to truly take full effect so a good doctor won’t switch your meds until the 3 month mark. You have to be patient with it and see a psychiatrist because no other doctors like internists or family doctors know what they’re doing. I’m on Luvox, buspar, and Wellbutrin now which sounds like a scary amount but I feel like myself in a good way finally.

I’ve been on 50mg sertraline for about three months now and I’ve noticed an improvement. The only real issue with side effects I’ve had is the night sweats. Have you tried therapy? I had CBT first and then had to stop and I decided that medication could work for me and complement CBT too

As my current mental health has definitely reached a new low, I will probably soon start with medication. However, since I am actually somewhat afraid of the typical side effects of antidepressants and mood-stabilizers, I wanted to ask anyone who is or has been taking medication for OCD and or depression (and mood-swings). I recently got also diagnosed with depression (I’ll be further tested for burnout) and I also suffer from pretty intense mood swings and anxiety, both really draining the last bit of energy that I currently have. You can honestly be as specific and descriptive as you want since I don’t know any people in my personal life that take any medication for their mental health and I’m genuinely curious about side effects, how long the different meds take to kick in, etc. The only meds I’m familiar with are beta blockers, specifically bisoprolol but I want to switch to propranolol.

Has anyone had success treating their OCD without medication and solely ERP or non-medicinal methods. I have pretty severe OCD and just about every sub-type, but I’ve been on various meds (SSRI & SNRIs) for going on 8 years and have never found one that truly relieves me of symptoms. I’m looking to see if it’s worth continuing with the side effects I experience (mostly mild) or if there are alternatives that could work for me. Low key tired of constantly changing meds in an attempt to find something that works when maybe medicine isn’t the route for me…

Can people please share their experiences on very low dose medications for their OCD? Maybe ones that have worked well with little side effects? Anything is helpful & thank you
