They decrease the intensity of symptoms enough to make therapy more effective

@Anthony1999 I’ve been trying to find meds that work, seems like none work for me. I have BAAAD intrusive thoughts

@Anthony1999 They dont, they just reduce the intensity I'd the feelings behind them. For example 2 months ago I had a bad flare up. I had 2 stressful things happen back to back and thought I would die. The thoughts were so bad, I was confused, couldn't sleep or eat. In hindsight I'm wondering how i went to work every day. The meds allowed me to rest, eat and lessen the overwhelming feelings. It was like watching a horror movie. Some parts you're terrified in and its it's really scary but the rest of the movie you feel scared just not with the same intensity.

For me the Introduction of an SSRI saved my life. To this day it gives me the ability to withstand any obsession that my mind creatively creates.

@Anthony1999 They help. I still feel anxiety but they give me breathing room to pause and choose actions that match my values.

Yep. Helps me a ton. Life would be miserable without medication for me. Gets me to a place where I can actually fight the ocd. I take Zoloft. A really high dose. But dosages differ for everyone and some people get a better effect from less dosage I’m told. The side effects of my high dosage suck...but it’s worth it.

What are some side effects you’re experiencing? At what dosage? I orginally started at 50mg and it worked to rid of harm OCD, but with my current existential OCD (which I am finding little to no answers on how to treat) 150mg helps but without learning actual coping skills Im still getting panic attacks from triggers that are intense. If I were to increase my dosage, what side effects could I expect?

Medication has saved my life. I gain weight that I can’t lose and I’m sleepy all the time, but I’m not suicidal anymore. I wish I didn’t have to take meds, but I’m so thankful they exist. They are the only that helps by themselves—what I mean by that is that my ocd and depression are so bad that I can and have spent years in therapy (and yes, in erp with an ocd specialist) not getting better, and then start a medication that works and I’m 70% back to normal in 6 weeks. It doesn’t fix the problem and it’s not a cure, but it makes living manageable and it helps therapy work.

I had a lot of success with cipralex and I got switched to Pristiq and it’s been working relatively well until it just decides to not work temporarily for whatever reason - it’s really hard to know if a medication is working or not, usually other people will notice before you notice it on yourself. It can really be helpful!

Concerta except I messed up the order I needed to take the doses so I have been without them for 2 days and it's pretty awful tbh. Have another appointment tomorrow tho thank god! Works well for me when taken right tho. Tried vyvanse and it hurt my stomach

Both of those are for ADHD not OCD. I have ADHD too but stimulants don’t work on me so I’m on a non stimulant called Straterra

@OCDLatter-daySaint That's interesting I have heard of that and I'm glad it works for you. I'm also on prozac for OCD symptoms

@EMMaaaa Gotcha awesome! Hope your order got worked out. Dealing with the pharmacy and insurance has been really hard for me. So often there are blockades when I try to fill my high dose ocd meds. Even though I’ve been taking them for 20 years.

(25f) Before I was diagnosed with OCD I tried Lexapro (wasn’t bad but wasn’t great) and Citalopram (partially think it was a part of what caused me to develop severe anxiety that ignited my once not so active OCD.) After diagnosis tried Effexor and didn’t see an improvement. Was on Adderall for a good amount of my life and mentally did good on it, stopped about 2 years ago because the physical side effects started to become more noticeable. Maybe I go back on Adderall? Maybe SSRI’s and I aren’t a great fit? Anyone taking other medications that helped?

For those who have had success with medication for OCD/anxiety, how is your life different now compared to before starting medication?

I understand that everyone is different but lately I have been debating on medication just because of past experiences but does anyone have any good experiences with medication that has helped them with their OCD as well as therapy or treatment? As of now I’m dealing with it by myself but it feels like it may be getting worse
