I don't think it's explicitly against ethical codes. It is a bit odd, imo. But I don't live in an area of the country where religion is super strong in the culture

Where I live there is a stronger presence of religious folks. She has mentioned god before but never as a part of treatment. She does not base my therapy off religion either.

even counselors who aren't faith based can bring in your faith if it's something you have talked about being important to you and you would like it to be included. I am a Christian counselor but trained and bound by the same ethics as any other counselor. As long as you are comfortable with her praying for you there is no ethic violation.

She asked for a hug afterwards which I happily gave her. She has given me hugs before too. She gives a motherly vibe. I was comforted by her prayer because she prayed for my recovery and thoughts to go away. But now it’s on my mind of whether or not this is appropriate or goes against a code of ethics for therapists ??

It was at the end of our session before I left

As someone who is a social worker, I would not pray for someone who did not bring it up themselves. I think it is fine if you were cool with it.

I’ve mentioned I believe in God. But I am not too religious

No not at all. This is the first time she has asked if she could pray for me (she knows I’ve been through a lot) in the months I’ve been seeing her. She does not base her therapy off religion either and has not used God as one of her ways to counsel people

@Greenwhale No I just wanted to make sure if my therapist was doing everything appropriately and didn’t cross a line. I don’t think it counts as reassurance ?

Also when she prayed for me she sat next to me and held my hand

If you're not comfortable with it, you can let her know. She should stop

@NOCD Advocate - Katie I had no problem with it and feel like I still don’t. Usually if someone is praying for you they will hold your hand (my mom does that). But since it’s my therapist I began to wonder if it was appropriate or against a code of ethics for therapists? If not then I am okay with it. I just want to make sure my therapist is not crossing a line

I've never been to therapy but it wouldn't really put me off. Maybe she's just more caring/connected with her patients

I think it was incredibly kind of her! From what you said before, she sounds like a great therapist. Praying is comforting, religious or not, its asking the universe to bless this person. Dont be afraid to bring that up with her.

Sounds like she's crossing boundaries.

My counselor asks to pray with me after every session but the place I go to is faith-based so my experience is different. I think if they offer it shouldn’t be a problem unless if they force it upon you

Faith based that would make sense. Good luck!!! ❤
