the best practice for me is not to try and counter every time. OCD doesn’t listen to reason. lean into the evidence as a “maybe/maybe not” experiment.

I guess I meant more like, not fight the evidence, but just let it go! And what you said makes total sense

@Immorethanocd "whelp, I'm not turned in by abs. Maybe I'm gay. Or maybe not. Oh well"

@NOCD Advocate - Katie I guess I’m still at the point where even thinking maybe terrifies me, because this evidence is so strong.

@Immorethanocd It's ok to feel terrified. It's unpleasant, but it's part of recovery

@NOCD Advocate - Katie Has there ever been a case where the ocd fear has turned out to be true?

@Immorethanocd I don't know. I haven't talked to everyone who has had OCD now, let alone in all of human history. And we have descriptions of individuals with OCD as far back as ancient Babylon. That's an impossible question to answer

@NOCD Advocate - Katie I guess it’s just part of doubt that I doubt it’s even ocd. It’s so dumb. Thank you for your patience, I’m trying really hard to get over this

@Immorethanocd I can tell. The work will pay off

@NOCD Advocate - Katie I know you can’t answer this, but do you think I’ll be able to have a healthy marriage with a man while these doubts about being gay continue? I’m afraid it’ll ruin my marriage if I’m convinced I should run off and get with a woman

@Immorethanocd You're right, I can't answer that. Can we pause and be gently curious about what led you to ask a question you knew I couldn't answer for you?

@NOCD Advocate - Katie Most definitely ocd. Thank you, sometimes it’s hard to know what I’m doing until I take a step back. It’s crazy. Thank you so much. I hope you have a good night!

Dealing with this right now. I have a tough time just “accepting” my thoughts. Especially when it’s connected to a real event that could have serious consequences on my future. It’s like my brain needs to figure out everything NOW, and until then, I can’t move on with my life.

Nick- I’m having the EXACT same issue and in search of any help. Let me know if you have any advice. I’ve been struggling with this for a long time and I’m so exhausted over worrying and obsessing over the real event.

@NOS09 I’m really sorry to hear that, it’s a really tough situation for sure. I wish I had some really good advice for you, but I don’t being I’m in a bad spot right now. What I would say is just try to find something to get your mind off of it; something that will help you stop ruminating on it so much. Therapy also seems to help people, I’m going to my first session in a couple weeks.

It’s hard, but either “it’s just a thought” or “if the fears are true, I’ll deal with it” works. But sometimes it will try to get around me. Currently it’s “Only X people think about X”
