Reassurance seeking is a compulsion which makes things worse. When you receive it, you may feel temporarily better, and then you find loopholes and arguments against the reassurance you were given. Maybe you don't deserve forgiveness and maybe you don't deserve her and maybe you were being unfair and maybe she deserves better and maybe she's not the one and maybe you're not attracted to her and maybe you're a bad person for thinking she looked ugly in a photo and maybe she really is ugly and maybe she's neutral and maybe she's beautiful and maybe she's not your type and maybe you deserve better. Etc. Has dwelling on any of these possibilities ever brought you even the slightest bit of happiness? How much time and mental energy would you reclaim if you stopped spending your time ruminating in loops on these ideas? We don't choose our intrusive thoughts. They always feel relevant. But we do have a choice about whether we debate and investigate them, or simply decide that we can survive not knowing all the answers, and live our lives doing things that seem to make us happy.
