Chemical imbalance is a myth. It’s you reacted to fear to a random thought your brain sent you and you reacted with a lot of fear so your brain thinks it’s important so it sends anxiety, fear, and a ton of other emotions because it thinks you are in danger. You do complusions which lead to the obsessions.

Agree^ I think we all have values and things that are important to us and it creates a thought that goes against your values or what you want in life and you start to panic

Research shows that it's a combination of genetic predisposition and life events (though they've been fairly unsuccessful at identifying which life events are relevant). Ultimately, we don't need to know the reasons OCD developed to engage in the changes that help us recover

My therapist says its a coping mechanism that helps us avoid our pain.

Your therapist tells you ocd is a coping mechanism to avoid our pain?? That’s kind of harsh and could be incorrect in so many ways. The truth is, we may never really know ‘why’... but to tell you that is kind of insensitive, in my opinion.

@dmuhnyyy It is a coping mechanism. It's just a very maladaptive one.

@NOCD Advocate - Katie At least, compulsions are a maladaptive coping mechanism for escaping from unpleasant thoughts, emotions, and sensations

@NOCD Advocate - Katie Compulsions are a coping mechanisms. The fact that we have ocd is not a coping mechanism. Who knows why we have these thoughts, there is no answer, and no way to stop them

@dmuhnyyy It depends on how you conceptualize OCD. If you conceptualize it as a brain illness, then no, it's not a coping mechanism. If you conceptualize it as an entrenched pattern of unhelpful behaviors in response to unpleasant experiences, then it is a coping mechanism. I prefer to look at it as the latter, because doing so provides a roadmap for recovery

So what do think.... about the natural ways to cope with ocd....if ur symptoms are not severe?
- Date posted
- 5y
The first line treatment for OCD is behavior therapy, ERP. ERP alone works much better than medication alone. Medications are used for moderate to severe OCD to decrease the intensity of symptoms so that the person can be more consistent with behavior therapy

If it isn’t a a chemical imbalance then why is there no cure? And why do the thoughts never go away?
- Date posted

There is cure... who told u its not?

If it was just chemical imbalance.... doctors could fix it quickly... in some time.... bcz. Its easy to fix merely chemical imbalance

@contemplative Even people who have recovered still have the thoughts. The thoughts don’t just disappear and go away

@dmuhnyyy Actually it has many resons.... and the if someone says.... 90% recovery .... U know.... 10% thoughts are natural.... this is human mind..... ok.... but problem starts when they become worse..... or become out of control
- Date posted
- 5y
@contemplative Yes thoughts are natural. OBSESSING over thoughts is not natural. The fact that they happen to people who still recover so often. But there really isn’t a way of knowing for sure. But it’s definitely something in the brain that we can’t control. Whether it may be an imbalance or not

@kls323 I have had actual panic attacks, which is what causes my panic ocd. But I mostly only start to feel panicky, my panic attacks are rare actually

@kls323 Yeah. It fucking sucks im not gona lie. But you have to treat them like any other thoughts. Let them be there. Let the feelings of panic just be there. Don’t question them or ask ‘why’ simply allow them to be. It’s hard as hell. But I promise if I can get better with them; so can you

@dmuhnyyy You are so nice thank you. It does suck. Hoping when it if I get on meds it will help and not make me worse.

@kls323 In the mean time; try to stay busy. That’s really the only way to get through. I’m nervous for meds as well. I’m not sure if I want to take them
