I see your hurting. I'm hurting with you just from reading that. I know it may not sound like a lot, but you have a community here that cares about you ☺.

I can emphasize with you as I’ve been told to ‘ just snap out of it’ lol. My mom is also quite ignorant to the severity of my illness. On the surface she accepts it but also thinks I should be able to think straight. I’ve accepted it’s not their fault, the people who do not understand mental illness, and of course you want the people closest to you to understand it . But Ultimately they do not need to understand. only you need to understand your illness, how it’s affecting you, and the symptoms you’re dealing with to get the help you need. It’s hard to help yourself when you are sick but if you make that a first priority and you get better then everything else in your life falls into place the right way. There is so much help out there it’s unbelievable. Ocd is a legitimate illness just like someone with diabetes maintaining their sugar levels, we have to maintain this illness through therapy and in most cases medication. Have you heard of OCA? It’s like alcoholics anonymous but instead obsessive compulsive anonymous. It’s a really wonderful support group. I wish you all the best! Just know you’re not alone there are a lot of others out there suffering and if you just stick with determination and commitment to recover, you’ll be just fine! With love, Jennie

You mention that you're in college. Many colleges have a counseling center where you can get therapy for free or at low cost. Also, if you are above 18 (at least in the US), your mom doesn't have the power to make medical decisions for you or to talk to your therapist.

Unfortunately, due to covid I can’t be on campus to access the facilities and I have to start home. Even though I legally have power to do these things, my mom still won’t let me and I have no energy to argue with her about it. I also can’t drive yet, so I couldn’t even take myself if I wanted.

@stop. Right now there are lots of options for teletherapy, including through this app. You wouldn't necessarily have to tell her you're getting therapy

@NOCD Advocate - Katie I think I tried to do therapy through this app, but it wasn’t available in my area yet. I could look at some other online therapy, but I don’t really have the money for it. I do have insurance, but I’d have to get the information from my mom since she keeps all my stuff.

@stop. Ahh, ok. I can see how that's a barrier. Perhaps if you choose to ask for your insurance information, you could frame it as "developing independence". That way she might think it's a positive thing (which it is)

@NOCD Advocate - Katie I believe she said something about letting me keep my own insurance card anyway. She hasn’t really said much else about it, but I could probably get it somehow.

@stop. That would probably be a good thing to do regardless of whether you decide to pursue therapy
