You are so not alone. I do it terribly. Even when I’m doing better with most things, it always gets its own check in with my doctor. I also get hives...as if I needed another reason to pick. 🤦🏼♀️

Ugh. So sorry to hear. I just got dip powder on my nails for the first time, and it makes it so hard to scratch!!! I really suggest getting it done. There's always a clear option if you don't like color. It makes your nails so thick, you can't get them to dig into anything! They're super strong and long-lasting. I highly suggest it.

@sapphoinastripclub I haven’t tried that yet. I have done just press-ons before and those are harder to pick with. Usually any manicure helps me pick less because I don’t want to mess it up, but right now it’s one that my niece did for me a week ago, so I guess the problem is I don’t care so much right now if it gets messed up.

Oh I definitely have this for sure. I used to bite my nails and then over the years it turned into skin picking on my fingers. And I can’t seem to break this habit, it’s like I do it unconsciously I wish I could stop.

i haven't been diagnosed because i'm too embarrassed to bring it up. it gives me comfort (in a weird way) and i know that if i tell somebody, it'll force me to break the habit. i know that i should do it but in a very strange way, i feel like it's the only thing that consistently grounds me and brings me joy. that sounds so sad but i think that it's true.

i used to bite my nails and i have a skin condition that i pick at so i’d assume that falls under dermotillomania (although tbh i don’t have any feelings about it and it’s quite fun. i would stop if it went away but lightly picking at myself has always been an anxiety reflex)

i’ve never heard of this. i do pick my skin though. can you tell me a bit about it?

Yeah! Dermatillomania is the skin equivilant to trichotillomania (hair pulling.) I basically will absentmindedly run my fingertips over problem areas (these are my specific ones) like my scalp, face, hands, legs, upper back, and arms. If I feel a blemish (pimple, bug bite, dry skin, scab, etc.) I will start picking and scratching at it, often until I bleed. I then will most likely pick the scab until it scars. It's horrible, and I feel so ashamed of it.

@sapphoinastripclub oh! i had no idea about that. but there is no need to be ashamed :(. you can’t help it! it’s alright. i hope you don’t beat yourself up over this.

@MakeAChange I try my best not to. I know it's my brain making me do it. Still, I get so embarassed. I'm working on stopping. I just got dip powder done on my nails so they're too thick to scratch anything!
