This is very true and also I say OCD is the dumbest thing ... I still have it but this is true the more u realize the easier it is

Love this take. OCD is simply just a trick in the brain. Sometimes it is so nice to just laugh at how ridiculous it is.

We need to accept ocd is possibly real. Our thoughts might be real. Our worst fears might come true, we will never know for sure. Ocd may be a trick, but it may be real. Our thoughts might be real and not ocd. No one knows! Accepting this uncertainty, the anxiety it brings, and letting it go down without compulsions is the only way to recover.

Totally. The more we practice resisting compulsions, the more confident we become in ourselves and the sillier those old compulsions start to seem.

Absolutely. You are not your thoughts and the simplest trick can be to tell yourself "that's not real, it's just a thought". It doesn't have to mean anything. Labelling feelings as anxiety helps me too. Figuring out what I'm anxious about around the thought or at the time of compulsion. Just having a therapist diagnose me with OCD was a relief!

This can be a road to false recovery. We need to accept ocd may be real. The thoughts may be real. They also might not be real. Accept uncertainty and that we may or may not be or do what we are afraid of. This is the only way to recover. Disproving the thoughts as fake is only a compulsion and will make u worse!

@pureolife Yes but to treat ocd we often have to treat them like they are 50/50. Or else our brains like my brain, will go "but that 2% chance it might happen means It will". We learn through recovery eventually the real chances are very low but at first treating them 50/50 is very scary but is very necessary. This is coming from multiple nocd therapists as well. even though it sucks er have to pretend its 50/50 in order to get our brain exposed to very high levels of anxiety

@Dianaaa And also what I was saying doesn't mean its 50/50. It might happen, but it might not happen doesnt mean its necessarily 50/50. Getting into numbers and chance and analyzing the chance or risk is also a compulsion, so its better to keep it as "it may happen, or it may not happen"

Very true. And it’s such a dumb disease. But in the moment it feels SO real, and “evident” that I’m not sure how to remind myself it’s fake 😭😂 tips?

So far for me I've had to do the thinking afterwards. A Thought Record has been a good tool for me, writing down what I was doing, what the thoughts were, ascribing a feeling and rating the severity. I had a depressive episode yesterday and when I really broke it down I was hungry and exhausted and just followed my thoughts down the wrong path. I think relieve some pressure on yourself in the moment and do the exercise when you're in a calm, safe space. It's what works for me so far at least!
