Have you overcome harm ocd and intrusive thoughts? Mine are so horrible and I hate them so much and I feel like a murderer. I started erp today and the first exposure was so scary, with your harm ocd did you always live in constant fear of hurting someone and constant fear that ur gonna do something bad? Did you get nervous around knives and your family?

Yep. I didn’t live with knives in my home for many years. Yes. I also thought it was possible I might be a serial killer, mass shooter, rapist and general psychopath. Around age 25, I checked myself into the hospital under the pretense of protecting other people from me. I was sure I was dangerous. Now? I’m about cook dinner using a massive butcher knife and couldn’t be more indifferent.

Thanks! For whatever reason I struggle to see myself as some sort of inspirational person, but I appreciate the kind words nonetheless!

@NOCD Advocate - Carl Cornett You are inspirational in two ways: you are courageous to do erp and get better at your mental health. Second, you are trying to give back to the community here.

Hi Carl, did you ever struggle with mental rehearsing? I am getting ready to return to work after being gone for a few months and the mental rehearsing is almost automatic now, all day long. I try to distract myself with my mundane house tasks but they often break through those tasks and I find myself rehearsing constantly, past present and future events. Any tips for reducing rehearsing would be great.

Sure, mindfulness meditation is partly set helpful. Truth is, everyone does this. It’s a fantastic evoluntionary survival mechanism to be able to imagine past or future scenarios so that you increase your chance of not being hurt. It’s very human to do this. But just how a few Oreos might be okay, once you’ve eaten an entire sleeve, you might have to reconsider your choices. Mindfulness is the practice of cultivating the ability to BE aware of your conscious experience—including thoughts—and gently bringing yourself into the present. The key word being practice. Training your mind is no different than training in the gym for your body. There’s a lot of apps out there, personally I prefer 10% Happier. Thank you! It’s funny, I’ve taken workshops on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, have all the books on meditation and mindfulness, but since the OCD has been in full force it makes you forget it all/so hard to stick with things. I downloaded the app and will check it out. Thank you!

Wellness is a lifestyle, and requires a certain focus to do it. Now I’m as guilty as anyone of “falling off the wagon”, but prioritize your mental health, because truly, everything else is impacted by it. I finally started putting it first because when the plane is going down you have to have your oxygen mask on before you can help anyone else.
