The goal of ERP is to help get rid of your source of stress. And by source I am referring to your anxiety. The only way unfortunately that can effectively be done is by confronting the issue head on. I did ERP and trust me it was tough in the beginning. In order for ERP to work you have to accept the fact that it’s not going to be comfortable. It will take you completely out of your comfort zone. You have to be willing to stand up to your fears. Otherwise OCD will cripple you for the rest of your life. This makes sense though because think about it. How does someone overcome a fear of any sort. By exposing themselves to the very thing that scares them or causes them distress. OCD exists because of two things in my personal opinion. Fear and compulsive behavior that is directly caused by fear. The cure to OCD would be the reverse effect. You expose your self to your triggers and avoid any form of compulsions. Now while doing this you will still have fear which is normal. However, once your compulsions gradually start going away. You will gain more confidence and will be more willing to do ERP. Then at that point your fear will slowly wither away day by day.

Thank you for explaining! I appreciate it, I understand now. It’s just so scary to think about putting myself into the position to trigger even more anxiety, that is what is stopping me for starting it really sucks:(

@alexa Don’t worry if you follow what your therapist tells you to do. I promise you will get better. But the key is you have to believe in this wholeheartedly. Even the smallest speck of doubt will stop you on your road to recovery.

@marleneee0917 So make sure you believe!

Well you have to remember this fact. The human mind is very powerful. When your mind is constantly feeding you doubts. You have to possess the resolve to overcome that. This can only be done though until you believe in yourself and be certain of who you are. If you know deep down inside you’re a good decent human being. Then why should your thoughts define who you are as a person. Like I told Alexa don’t expect to overcome your fears immediately from the very beginning. However, if you continue to do your required therapy and have realistic expectations for yourself. You will without a shadow of a doubt become better. I did it and so can you guys it is not impossible.

Well that’s the problem you have too. That is the only way I got better my friend. I know what you are going through. For the longest time I had no confidence within myself. OCD completely took it away from me. Then one day it hit me that my self doubt is what was handicapping me. There is no reason you shouldn’t believe in yourself. You should because I was in your position. And look at me now I’m almost completely cured of my OCD. All it took was me just giving myself a chance. Which is what I advise you to do. Give yourself a chance and just simply believe.

How long did it take you to start seeing results

@marleneee0917 The NOCD approach helps people see results in 8 weeks or less depending. There are always variables, of course, but that gives you an idea

@marleneee0917 If you stay consistent with it you could start seeing small improvements within just a couple of days. I didn’t start seeing major improvement until about 3-4 weeks. Even though it does take time you are guaranteed to get better. As long as you stay committed with your therapy everyday. It’s not a matter of if it is just a matter of when.

Listen I don’t know what mistake you made and I don’t expect you to tell me. At the end of the day we are all human beings and it’s in our nature to make mistakes. I made so many mistakes and still do to this day. But just because I made mistakes does that mean life is over. No it is not the only way we get better as humans is by making mistakes. So be more focused on learning from your mistakes. Instead of ruminating constantly on what you did wrong. Accept your shortcomings and move forward with your life.

So what should I do when I feel that I need to cry and apologize?

@marleneee0917 If you start with seeing a therapist, they will make this all make so much sense and you will build confidence in knowing how to respond to OCD.

@marleneee0917 Yep, sounds about right. The way out is through. It’s SO hard but also it will get easier. Did you manage to resist apologizing? Your relationships will get better as you resist apologizing. Have you read up on moral Scrupulosity?

@marleneee0917 P.S. OCD always makes us FEEL like we must act NOW. That’s why the advice is to sit with the discomfort. You don’t want OCD running your relationships.

@marleneee0917 Have you read at all about willingness in ERP or about values-based exposures? I wonder if those two ideas could help.
