I'm sorry that you're feeling like this. But you're not losing. You're winning. You're fighting the best you can, and working towards getting better. That really takes guts, to get out of bed, and fight, and go to therapy, even though you're bombarded with these horrible thoughts all the time. What you're doing is really hard, you're admirable. All of us who live with this every day are. And don't worry if you don't get immediate results from therapy - there's a long road ahead. There will be ups and downs, just don't lose hope, things will slowly start getting better.

Congrats on starting therapy! The thing about ocd therapy is that most of the actual work gets done outside of session through homework assignments. It’s okay if you can’t see them every week. The focus for you will be on staying diligent about doing your homework consistently. I know things feel shitty right now but there’s a great opportunity to start getting better now.

I see. I’m just afraid of having been assigned the wrong therapist. She seems like a nice person and I specified that I needed someone who specializes in ocd but my ocd is a freaking monster. It’s always changing and shifting and getting stronger. And she didn’t really seem to be paying much attention to the fact that I had ocd. There were so many other things I wanted to tell her but couldn’t because we didn’t have enough time, and now I have to wait another 9 days. Who knows what could happen in that time.

@Jay Is she an ocd specialist or just a regular therapist? Ask her if she’s worked with pure o patients before (ie people with mental compulsions.) many regular therapists claim they can help with ocd but actually have no idea how to help anyone who isn’t dealing with overt themes like contamination (ie physical compulsions like hand washing.) As a general intake appointment it makes sense that she was focusing on more than just ocd. I’m sure she wants to also be aware of other comorbid diagnosis or symptoms and understanding your goals. And it’s okay you didn’t discuss and address everything in your first session. There’s a lot to cover. Just be sure next time to be clear about your goals (ie “I want erp treatment for ocd with mental compulsions) and make sure you get a clear answer on whether she’s qualified for that.

@pureolife Otherwise you may need to seek out a different therapist. One you’re sure specializes in ocd.

@pureolife She didn’t tell me whether she was an ocd specialist or not. I asked her if she’s worked with people like me before (people with severe ocd) and she said yes but I don’t know. I guess it’s just me doubting everything like I always do. I can’t remember it super clearly. A lots been on my mind this past week.

@Jay I know ocd makes us doubt a ton of stuff, but it is actually hard to find an ocd specialist. You’re not crazy. That’s not just in your head. You can revisit the topic next session. No need to figure out the answer now. Just write it down and remember to ask when you see her. I know the feeling of too much being on your mind. That’s normal and expected when you have ocd that’s gotten a little out of control. It gets better. Please be kind to yourself in the mean time. You deserve it.
