Hello! Although the diagnosis could be correct, I wouldn't move on from the possibility of OCD without seeing a specialist first. OCD can be linked to many mental health issues such as BPD, addictive personalities, obsessive personality disorders, general anxiety and depression. To rule out what's going on, I'd suggest seeking someone who is trained professionally in obsessive compulsive disorder. Most of us on this app do not have the "Hollywoodized" version of OCD: hand washing vigorously, organizing papers and chairs "just right" or being a germaphobe. Most of us have what is called "Pure O" which stands for pure obsession. This means that our rituals cannot be visibly seen - in fact, most people do not know that we suffer with OCD. Our rituals are completely mental and we seek reassurance through forums, videos, people close to us, etc. to battle our inner demons. If this sounds anything like you, I highly recommend seeing a specialist. OCD is one of the most misunderstood and misdiagnosed mental illnesses to exist. Have a great day :)

That’s very good advice. I mean, he didn’t completely rule out OCD, he just says that he doesn’t think it’s my main diagnosis. He thinks BPD is the overarching ailment and that’s where my treatment should be focused. And I kind of agree with him. If you look at a list of BPD symptoms on WebMD, I fit each and every one of them to a T. Like it’s so obvious that BPD is my main disorder, idk how everyone missed it up until this point. Another thing to consider is that I made a brief attempt at Exposure Therapy earlier this year and my exposures were quite awkward. I didn’t really feel like anything was being accomplished. My OCD therapist had said to me that even though she did believe I had OCD, something was definitely getting in the way of my OCD treatment. That something is likely my BPD. And my psychiatrist has me on Anafranil anyway so even if he doesn’t think I have OCD, this medication should take care of those symptoms lol.

Idk you could. Do you think the diagnosis is correct? Did you see an OCD specialist?

Yes I actually do agree with his diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder and ADHD. I don’t really have traditional OCD symptoms (e.g. hand washing, counting, checking, etc.). I think my obsessions and compulsions are so much like traditional OCD symptoms though and that’s why I’ve been misdiagnosed all these years. But I think a lot of my symptoms are BPD. My new psychiatrist is actually an addiction specialist but he is highly qualified and experienced; he has an MD and a PhD. So I trust his analysis.

@ma345 The only traditional OCD symptom I have is reassurance seeking

@ma345 Well if it all sounds good to you then I guess you don’t really need this app. You should try to find a BPD community instead. Best of luck :)

@ma345 i think i was also misdiagnosed with my ocd because she labeled it as “other specified obsessive and compulsive related disorder” all because i don’t do the hand washing and door knob checking shit. i feel so bad because i actually think i have ocd. i’ve been struggling with hocd for 8 months the same fucking thought over and over and over again and it’s just so fucking bad and i’m pissed at my psychologist

@holley So wait you think you do have OCD and your psychologist doesn’t think you do? Sorry just a little confused with what you said.

@ma345 she said i basically have ocd but it’s a very atypical presentation of ocd (talking about hocd) which is fucking stupid

@holley I think that’s where I’m at with my new psychiatrist. I certainly do agree with him that I don’t have OCD in the traditional sense, but I certainly do have obsessions and compulsions.

@ma345 And he has me on Anafranil which is gold standard for OCD lol

@ma345 exactly. is he an ocd specialist? i’m thinking of going to one to get my diagnosis straightened out. i was diagnosed with other disorders too and they were all correct except the ocd one

@holley No he’s an addictions specialist because I deal with a number of addictive behaviors. But he is very highly qualified. He has a PhD and an MD. So he’s incredibly intelligent and I trust him.

What themes did you believe you were suffering from and how are they related to bpd?

Reassurance seeking and sexual obsessions are probably the two biggest themes. But he thinks the sexual obsessions are paraphilia and not ocd related. Then I have habits like compulsive spending, compulsive eating, compulsive over-researching. All of these can be a part of BPD.

@ma345 Hearing it might be paraphilia related must have caused distress.

@Alma It doesn’t surprise me and it makes perfect sense.
