Hey there. Been there, done that. It can cause a lot of damage to have a family like that but you seem like a very considerate, intelligent young person. Do you feel like your father is someone who you can openly talk to? Is there a way you can discuss this with him separately from your step mother?

Sadly, I don’t. He’s not very emphatic and never has been. He doesn’t want to listen to what I have to say, and he often only cares about himself. However, my mom and stepdad are very understanding, so they are always there to support me. I wish he would listen, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that he won’t. In the end, I know no matter what happens, I tried my hardest to keep the relationship. :)

@brhtpurple You've got a good head on your shoulders! I'm glad that you have your mom and stepdad to support you; it's a great sign that you have helpful, healthy people that you can turn to. I can tell you from my personal experience, that once I moved out of my household and got on with my life, my toxic family members slowly changed and we now have a somewhat cordial and friendly relationship (albeit, distant). So not all hope is lost, and you're the better person in the end for putting in effort when you don't have to. I know you don't have the option of leaving your situation just yet, but hang in there and seek help when you need it. Sometimes, it is nice to just have someone listen to your situation. Do you have a hobby that you can turn to? For me, when I feel that I cannot express my views or tell someone how I feel, I make music or write.
