I'm sorry you seem to be in a situation that is causing distress. I am concerned for you because of your feeling of needing to sleep for a long time. When I have felt like that, it is usually because I have had such intense circumstances or emotions going on that it was so overwhelming for me that I wanted to get away from it all. I'm here if you want to talk about it, but just know that you are not alone.
I agree. And that's a lovely comment š
thank you!! I feel like as soon as things go bad I go straight to either hurting myself or sleeping pills, I was talking about 3/4 a day just to get through a while back, tbh I'm surprised it didnt kill me
@abby I have noticed that it is easiest for me to go straight to hurting myself, especially the thoughts of hurting myself. It's not easy, but I am working on getting my brain to do other things to relieve the overwhelming feelings. Is there anything else you can do to distract yourself for a bit?
@kspack11 I usually watch Netflix and it usually takes my mind off it for a while, but I keep some razor blades in a box in my makeup bag and idk if that's good or not, but I csnt throw them away cuz for nights like tonight where I'm struggling
@abby I would definitely suggest getting rid of the razor blades so that you don't have easy access to anything that you can hurt yourself with. If you feel the urge to hurt yourself, it can help to put your face in cold water or even to hold an icecube in your hand. I know sometimes you can only distract yourself for so long with things like netflix and the feelings can come back. If you do get those feelings to hurt yourself and can't distract more from them, will you please contact a crisis worker or the national suicide hotline? 800-273-8255. Or call 911. I will tell you, i actually chatted with a state crisis worker just yesterday and it was helpful.
@kspack11 thank you, I just feel like I need them there for security
@abby I know that feeling all too well. I just want you to know there are other avenues when you feel that way. It just might take a few extra minutes more than grabbing a razor blade. And it might not be as satisfying at first. Things can get better, though.
@abby Do you have friends or family close by that you can talk to?
@abby I just want you to know that you are loved, and even though I don't know you, I care about you. I have felt distressed, too, and things can get better. I am here to listen to anything you want to talk about or just to be here and care.
@kspack11 yeah
@kspack11 thank you
Are you on any medications now?
yeah zoloft
@abby Zoloft is activating. That might be contributing to your insomnia. Youāre not on anything else?
@ma345 no, I just wanted the sleeping pills to get away from it all, not to kill myself but just to put me to sleep for s long while
@abby Have you tried Hydroxizine? Itās an antihistamine that is sometimes used for anxiety relief, but itās also very sedating so I use it to help me get to sleep. You can also take supplements like Melatonin. However, if supplements donāt work then I would ask your doctor or psychiatrist about Hydroxizine, also known as Vistaril.
@ma345 I was told by my psychiatrist that sleeping pills like Ambien can have really weird side effects. Thatās why Iām suggesting the Hydroxizine, cause it helps with sleep and itās not an actual sleeping pill thatāll have weird effects on you
Oh also, sorry to rant but I love talking about meds with people even though Iām not a doctor. I sometimes wish I had gone on to become a psychiatrist instead of a weatherman. Anyway, another thing your psychiatrist might be able to do is augment the Zoloft with an antipsychotic that will help you sleep. You can take Zoloft in the morning, and then the antipsychotic at night to help you sleep. In fact, augmenting the Zoloft with an antipsychotic might also be more effective in treating your OCD. Most antipsychotics are sedating, but I know for a fact that Zyprexa helped me sleep better when I was on it. Seroquel is sometimes used for sleep too. Iām just trying to offer alternatives to the general sleeping pills like Ambien. If you still want to go that route, thatās up to you, but maybe considering the Vistaril or antipsychotic augmentation strategy is something to ask your doctor about. Hope Iāve been helpful. And by all means do NOT take Zoloft at night.
Ohh i always take zoloft at night gonna switch it up now. Also youre a weatherman?!
@abby You sound overwhelmed. What is going on that makes you want to sleep for a long time?
thoughts
That sucks. Is there something that triggered the thoughts?
yup
I was put on sleeping pills because I couldn't sleep at all due to the insomnia. I wouldnt wish sleeping pills on anyone. Honestly. My body, the brain became addicted to them. It took me just over a year to come off sleeping pills and it was so sad.. Being bound to a drug not because you want to, but because your body is addicted. Your sleep will recover. this too shall pass.
Does anybody else have to take something to fall asleep every night? I hate that I canāt fall asleep on my own because of my mind keeping me up. I envy people that can just fall asleep on their own :(
Very frightened about lack of sleep
One more question for yāall! Iām sure this is many of us, but I literally cannot sleep. If I do fall asleep, I maybe drift off for an hour or two. Then, Iām startled awakeā¦.intrusive thoughts running wild, heart racingā¦.and then I lie awake the rest of the night. Just stuck in panic mode until the sun comes up. Then I have to start the dayā¦already being in the rabbit hole for hours. Iāve tried every natural āremedyā nothing works. Iāve tried the pharmaceutical routeā¦that also doesnāt work! Sleep has now become the enemy and Iād rather just stay awake all night. Does anyone have anything that helps them?? Iām desperate. The body/mind canāt heal without proper sleep. Alsoā¦and maybe folks can speak to this too. Iām back on my SSRI (3.5 weeks in) after being off for a few months (mistake). Itās torture waiting for the effects to kick in.
