You can write a script. I have real event too. Keep it short... at most 3/4 of a page. “Today, I remembered when ________ happened. *specific details about event* this must mean I’m _____ (a murderer, pedophile, have covid, etc)... so now... *worst consequence imaginable*” Read it 30 times a day. 10 in the morning, 10 at lunch, 10 at night. No speed reading. The point is to feel the anxiety! And then no compulsing. It really works after a day or two. The story becomes boring- which is the goal!
Okay. Thank you so much! This is so helpful!!!
@Anonymous It came straight from my therapist! :) I hope you feel better soon!
@Anon123 Yes. OCD is an asshole. Just accept that you’ll never know the answers and tell ocd “that would suck!” And sit with the anxiety. It’ll eventually go away
@NOCD Advocate - Lauren W. Thank you! And how do we know if it’s an OCD fear or an actual fear ?
@Anon123 If you feel the need to compulse it is always ocd. You asking reassurance rn tells me it’s ocd.
@NOCD Advocate - Lauren W. I see, thank you! last question : for Real Event OCD, how do you know if a mistake is no big deal or actually important? Couldn’t OCD latch on an event that is really important/bad?
@Anon123 That’s the fun part- you don’t get an answer to that. I’ve asked my therapist the same thing. From my understanding though, real event ocd tends to cling to things that are grey areas. Not something you could be in jail for life over. It’s usually something you’re not proud of and it will exaggerate the severity of the situation to make you anxious.
@Anon123 Do you wanna add me on sc?
@NOCD Advocate - Lauren W. I don’t have sc :-(
@Anon123 Aw, well we talk some other way just lmk! I am here for you. I try to befriend all of my real event people Bc it feels less lonely
@NOCD Advocate - Lauren W. Aw that is so sweet of you! How did you heal from real event? I’ve been stuck with this since this summer and i see no progress
@Anon123 Tbh I haven’t healed completely. I’m in a bad funk rn. I “graduated” from NOCD therapy but it still sucks so bad sometimes. I guess that’s part of it. 😭 but I’m better prepared on how to handle it now when it does flare up
@NOCD Advocate - Lauren W. Aw i hope you’ll feel better soon! Do you mind me asking what are the tools that you saw in therapy for real event? I sadly don’t have access to NOCD therapists since i’m not from the US 😭
@Anon123 Real event is treated the same as any other theme. The thoughts, though real memories, are STILL intrusive. So it is treated the same... with erp... and I also take meds.
@NOCD Advocate - Lauren W. Thank you! I should find a therapist that does ERP! It just scares me so much and i also have the thoughts that i don’t deserve to be happy because of that mistake
@NOCD Advocate - Lauren W. Lauren do you have an IG I can follow?
@Anon123 I have that exact thought too. It tells me I don’t deserve to live or be a mom.
@NOCD Advocate - Lauren W. I’m so sorry to hear this ! It must be so hard ! I’m sure you’re an amazing mom and you deserve to live !
