It really wasn't a permanent solution for me at least, I'd say taking ssris got my ocd down to a point where I could handle ERP. Once I felt I could handle it on my own I weened myself off of it. Its sort of a last line of defense for me in case my ocd gets to the point I can't handle it on my own, but I always try to do without it for a time or just therapy, but that didn't always work. You should never be ashamed of needing the extra help, tho. Every brain and every situation is unique.

I understand!! I tried ERP for a few days and I couldn’t handle it because my brain was just going constantly. I couldn’t even focus on doing the work because my brain feels like a circus lol. That led me to medication.

That’s a good question, I’d like to know as well!

Right! I’ve seen a few people on here mention them and I just wonder what the reasoning of using them for OCD is for

My family has such a stigma towards medication, they think it will turn me into a vegetable.. that’s why I want to see a psychiatrist and get their advice

I understand. My dad at first hated the idea of me going on medication, and on the other hand my mom has had anxiety all her life and has had to take medication for it. I just started an SSRI so I’ll see how it goes lol

@Tatu Thank you! And it’s Celexa. I actually have tried Zoloft before for like 2 weeks but i didn’t like it. That’s the only other one I’ve tried.

Thats a pretty stereotypical response to anti depressants. This isn't heroin lol which will make you a zombie, if anything on the right meds you'll have the opposite effect.

@Tatu Lol, well who knows maybe your success story will change their mind! My dad was the same way, didn't even believe depression existed. I changed his mind slowly over time, so who knows perhaps you can do the same.

@aj2829 We have to be our own agents! Even though our family means well their logic can be flawed.. It’s great that you were able to show your father a different side

@Tatu That's a good point, we gotta do what's best for us. I'm glad you are doing just that!

I was at a point where, as I described it to my psychiatrist at the time, the thoughts weren’t coming from outside my head but they almost were. I didn’t hear them with my ears, only inside my head, but they were so loud that they felt almost audible. It was at that point that he suggested trying an antipsychotic in addition to my ssri, and it worked wonders. I’m still on it nine years later. I don’t know if my experience is common or is a good representation of what you’re asking about, but hopefully this helps. :)

i have bipolar disorder so i can’t take SSRIs as they induce mania, this is probably the case for most of the people on antipsychotics for OCD

SSRIs are actually much more affective for OCD than antidepressants from what i’ve heard so you will probably be fine

This is kind of a weird question, but I recently increased my SSRI dosage and have experienced tremendous relief. It has quieted my intrusive thoughts so much and my compulsions are no longer as all-consuming. However, I don’t want to be on this high of a dosage forever and know that medication alone shouldn’t be my only fix. I’m seeing a new psychiatrist on Wednesday and am wondering if the recent decrease in frequency of my symptoms will be a bar to my getting ocd treatment? In other words, if in this present moment I’m doing better, but up until a few days ago my compulsions were taking up pretty much every moment of my waking day, will I still be classified as having ocd? I start getting worried when I feel better that I don’t actually have ocd and just use it as a defense mechanism to avoid consequences of my actions/I’m secretly a terrible person

Hi everyone, I’m new to the community. I was diagnosed with OCD just a couple of months ago and have been doing some reading and other research to try and understand the disorder. With this, I have been actively seeing a great therapist who has been helpful to build tools to deal with my intrusive thoughts ( contamination OCD is my worst theme). Do help learn to deal with the compulsions, I start on Sertraline or “Zoloft” I believe since November 2024. Currently I’m on 50mg and have been doing this for just over a month. My question for those who are also taking Sertraline and it has been successful, how do you know it has really provided a benefit and how long did it take to get there? I sometimes feel the medication works, and sometimes I feel it doesn’t (maybe that’s my OCD trying to mess with things). Thanks!

Hey everyone, I’m curious if anyone here is managing their OCD without SSRIs. I’ve personally struggled with side effects in the past such as low libido and emotional numbness. I have plans to have a family and kids in the future, so SSRIs don’t feel like a long-term solution for me—I’m especially afraid of PSSD (post-SSRI sexual dysfunction). Are any of you managing OCD with alternatives like Wellbutrin, SNRIs, Adderall, NAC, Myo-inositol or any other supplements. Even approaches like the ketogenic diet or other functional methods? I read some studies about how Keto diet has helped some people put their OCD in remission. I’d love to hear what’s actually working for you. Trigger Warning: Sometimes hearing that people can’t manage OCD without SSRIs can be discouraging, but I’m staying hopeful that there are sustainable alternatives out there. Thanks in advance for sharing.
