most people with ocd are smart and actually over thinkers. is ocd interfering in your everyday life/ have you been to therapy before?

I’ve had 2 counsellors, but one I only got 6 sessions with and the other I broke my leg and had to end prematurely. Thank you so much for responding. It mostly causes minor interference in the day, small waves of anxiety that I’ve gotten used to but still have to deal with, it’s worst in the night, but I’m not sure she knows about that

I’m sorry your mom is like that. She sounds a lot like mine lol. It kinda sucks when you have OCD, but in doesn’t interfere with your functioning life much. People can handle the same mental illnesses very differently, so some can function better than others, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s less bad or severe. Some of us are just really good at hiding our mental illnesses and living our lives. I’m sorry your mom doesn’t realize how bad it is for you even if it’s not super obvious. Sometimes mental illnesses aren’t obvious which is why we need to really pay attention and care when people open up about them. We can’t just wait until it gets bad enough that we notice because by then it could be too late. Have you tried really sitting down with her and stressing how serious you are about this? Just you talking and explaining what you feel and not her interjecting with her own opinion about it.

That’s a great idea. I wish she would just sit and listen to me explain without interjecting to tell me I’m not right lol. I’ve been considering just writing down all my points, because that way there’s no way for her to stop me. I’m glad I’ve found some great people on this app that I can really relate to. I hide my OCD a lot, but inside I feel awful with managing my anxiety due to my OCD. I’m glad to see I’m not alone, as it can often feel like that

@dontwantmyparentsonthisapp Hopefully writing down all those points work for you because maybe it can show her how bad it is. You’re definitely not alone. There’s a lot of people that surprising have the same experiences with parents and OCD. It’s comforting to share that with people.

maybe it would help to write down a list of compulsions you find yourself doing throughout the day/night and rate your anxiety on a scale of 1-10 for each. You could then share this information with your mum and maybe both work together to break the list down into little tasks for you. this way she will know you are wanting support and hoping to get better 🙂
