Nurse practitioners are not qualified to give a diagnosis. And pure ocd and mental compulsions are incredibly common!

I made an appointment specifically to have a diagnosis and the nurse practitioner was there. Yeah I have more mental compulsions but that's not in the dsm5

@jayjay93 Mental compulsions aren’t in the dsm5?

@Isabella They told me that doesn't satisfy their criteria and that it's just generalized anxiety

@jayjay93 Oh, I know that ocd gets misdiagnosed and underdiagnosed a lot so if it’s a persisting issue maybe get a second opinion from another doctor?

@Isabella I feel like it's only nocd or ocd specialists that would really be able to help. I've talked to many therapists but they only have experience with physical compulsions

@jayjay93 Yeah nocd is great, I got diagnosed through here and I only experience mental compulsions.

@Isabella My issue is that nocd doesn't take my insurance

@jayjay93 It doesn’t take mine either unfortunately, I had to do an out of pocket plan, but it gave me a discount. $50 for 1 hour sessions and $25 for 30 minute ones

@Isabella Thank you. I'll think about iy

It’s unfortunate how much we trust and rely on the knowledge of people in the medical field and all it takes is one person to mess our path up and to confuse us with what’s going on with our bodies and minds. This is why I am my own advocate and do my own research as well. I would definitely search for an OCD specialist because there are definitely types of OCD with just mental compulsions! I want to challenge the book that says only 20% of people with OCD have obsessions only because I think there’s a lot more people who do have it who aren’t diagnosed yet! Good luck to you friend :)💞

Oh yeah I’m sure it probably based off theirs who have stepped forward in seeking help that the 20% is based off of

I've mentioned how it can take over my entire week at a time, is full of reassurance seeking, questions that lead to new questions, ruminations about if I'm messed up, if I've ever felt this way, if I want to do this in the future, trying to make sense out of everything.

I'm sorry that happened. I recommend getting a second opinion, if possible. The DSM-V actually refers to mental compulsions (exact language is "mental acts"), so that nurse practitioner is incompetent and incorrect.

Yes that sucks I also had a NP tell me that my thoughts aren’t normal when I first didn’t know what’s going on. I posted earlier from an anxiety and phobia book that said 20% of people with ocd have obsessions only. You’re not alone friend. The dsm-v also describes ocd as obsessions, compulsions, or both.

I would look for a therapist not a normal doctors office for the most accurate diagnosis

I talked to one and she didn't have experience with this and wanted to refer me to someone else. She was only used to physical compulsions

@jayjay93 I’ve never heard of that, that’s doesn’t make much sense

That's incredibly frustrating and inaccurate of them to say. More and more research shows that there are many people with OCD who only suffer from mental compulsions.
