Because those are usual thoughts and they aren't a threat to us, but due to us getting triggered by them, we fall into the cycle of OCD, where We have a thought - get scared - try to calm ourselves down (which is a sygnal for the brain, that you are trying to get rid of a threat) - Your brain sends you more thoughts and triggers. With ERP, you Have a trigger - Your brain wants to get rid of the threat, but you don't do any compulsions and sit with anxiety - Nothing happens you you. You don't die, none of the hunter animals bite you, there are no snakes in the room. - You calm down a little bit.

Thanks, that clarifies it! :) I find it odd that we are able to ignore and don't make much of some thoughts, but some become obsessions.

@PineappleSea Yeah, that's sometimes random, and sometimes it grabs onto our fears of what's important to us

Because everybody has this thoughts, we just put too much attention to them!

This is the answer

By continually doing that, we aren't necessarily telling ourselves that the thought isn't true. What we do, is we get rid of the abnormal anxiety associated with a thought, and then we get to finally understand that it's no longer connected with our beliefs. And it usually isn't, because why would you get triggered in the first place then.

I don't want my thoughts to become real, but that's what the therapy does and I don't understand that.

Therapy doesn’t make your thoughts become real. It makes it so you are no longer anxious by the intrusive thoughts.

@Justmesadly You just told me I'm supposed to make the contents of my thoughts real

@canigetawitness And habituate to them. That's who told me. And the rest of the people on this thread.

@canigetawitness I did not tell you anything close to make the context of your thoughts real. you do erp to get to the point that the thoughts no longer make you anxious. You should see an OCD specialist if you aren’t already because having a clear understanding of therapy and OCD it’s self will really help you

@Justmesadly You said habituate to the content of the intrusive thoughts. I mean, it's what I asked in my original question. This therapy is so confusing.

@Justmesadly I've been working with an OCD specialist and I'm more confused.

@canigetawitness Yes getting used to the thoughts doesnt mean you do whatever your thoughts said as you stated above. I’m not sure why you think that. if you’re in therapy then you should be speaking to your therapist and understand we do the opposite of that and if asking them more questions. Have them explain what erp is and what the point of it is. Have them explain what ocd is and what the fears mean. Taking away the anxiety of a thought doesn’t mean you’re acting on the thought.

One of the reasons I haven’t done ERP. It seems counterintuitive to me if the thoughts are all lies to try and imagine them to be real

Because you are triggered ny them of course.

I don't get it. So if I have a thought that the stove is on, Im supposed to leave the stove on from now on. or if I have a thought I've killed someone, I'm supposed to kill someone. Or If I have a thought I've lost $100, I'm supposed to lose $100. This makes no sense.

I don’t know who told you this or where you came up with this but none of this is true or how therapy works

What is your actual fear or ocd theme?

Meta OCD. I obsess about obsessing. And I obsess about how to do treatment when I get an intrusive thought

@canigetawitness Cause erp doesn’t work for everyone and I’m guessing all your compulsions are mental right?

@Gosu123 Yes, they're all mental 24/7. Its hell. I can't sleep. Things are really bad.
