I've been on Clomipramine for 2-3 years now, along with Zoloft. Clomipramine is actually the oldest OCD medication (used since the 60's) and despite being a little higher risk of some a bit more severe side effects (especially heart related, which is why you need to take a ECG and monitor blood pressure&heart rate when using it) it is helpful for me. I may have a little dry mouth or something but that's it. I'm in a bit of a low again but I know that without medication helping me some to lower the intensity of the thoughts and the anxiety I would be a lot worse. It took me, like, 2 years to find something that worked well for me. I'm now working on upping my zoloft since my anxiety has been increasing now. Meds react differently for everyone. I personally am apparently "picky" with medications. I did not handle a high dose of clomipramine well either so I am only on 50mg.

I have only been on it 3 weeks and just got to 100mg which is considered a therapeutic dose. I haven’t noticed any difference yet to be honest...but I do have that dry mouth. Very common side effect.

@NOCD4me@123 It really depends on the person. I even got a genetic test done in 2018 (1 year after first noticing symptoms) to know what medications are most likely to work well for me because of how long it took me to find something that actually helped.

@RoseFaye My psychiatrist has talked about doing that genetic test we just never have! It would definitely be useful.

@RoseFaye I didn’t know we have to be monitored on this med. I was never monitored before for my heart :/ im back on it and now I’m a bit worried

According to that test, Clomipramine was on the least likely to work well colour but I handle it well as long as I am only on a low dose, so it really depends. The one I got was called Genecept, through Dynacare, though I don't think Dynacare is outside of Canada. https://www.dynacare.ca/what-s-next/genetics/pharmacogenetics.aspx

I am interested in this as well. What was your experience on Lexapro? Did it just not work or were side effects to bad?

I was on Zoloft, then Luvox, then Lexapro, then Effexor, and now I’m on Clomipramine. No effect yet. Only been 3 weeks and I am not at a therapeutic dose.

None of them worked? Any side effects for any of them?

@Kls2121 Actually Zoloft worked pretty well. I had been on it for 9 years. We decided to switch it up last summer due to a relapse. I was only on Luvox for a week or two because I started having some vivid suicidal ideation. Lexapro just didn’t do anything. The Effexor wasn’t doing much either although I had 2 really good weeks end of February early March. So now I’m on Clomipramine and I just reached 100mg dose which is a therapeutic dose and I plan on going up 25 mg every week. Hopefully this works, if not, it’s on to the antipsychotics.

@Kls2121 I’m probably at my worst right now. Fingers crossed we can only go up from here? I’d really like the Clomipramine to work because I’m exhausted from medication trials. I’m pulling some superhuman strength out of idk where to get through this. My only side effect with the Clomipramine is an occasional dry mouth which can be annoying but if this medication works and can help me get out of this relapse then I will take the dry mouth!!!

@NOCD4me@123 Yes! I would choose dry mouth over anything. I hope your not at your worse because of the medication. At least you were brave enough to try the medication. I've been so scared but at this point I need to do something.

@Kls2121 Nah I think I’m probably at my worst because the OCD has been really retry severe for such a long period of time. To be fair, I’m not too afraid of medication as I’ve got a bunch of other health conditions as well but I appreciate you thinking me brave! Medication can be really REALLY helpful when you find the right one. I hope you do.
