As far as I know, it’s is chemical/genetic. OCD is due partially because of a lack of serotonin. It’s also caused due to incorrect wiring in the brain which is why it’s a neurodivergent disorder. I highly suggest you look into neurodivergent disorders. I do think trauma can enhance or cause the onset of OCD symptoms. OCD is technically something you’re born with but the symptom onset my not occur until later in life due to trauma, stress, anxiety, etc.

I’ve heard/seen that the lack of setertonin could be connected to the communication between the midbrain and the prefrontal cortex and that people with OCD may lack in normal communication between those areas.. but I feel like nobody actually knows wth is going on with anyone’s brain. It’s v interesting but frustrating there’s no more concrete answers or treatments.

@em887766 Yes I agree. Nothing is for certain with OCD causes and it’s frustrating for sure.

I wish it was known. With how long OCD and other mental health issues have been around it blows my mind that causes and cures have not been established. Maybe because they make too much money off of sick people. I feel like we need to fight for causes and cures because if we don’t no one else will.

I don’t understand why psychiatry is the ONLY doctrine of medicine where they don’t directly examine the organ they’re treating! They could know so much more if they tackled psychiatry like oncology instead of throwing “darts in the dark” with different medications.. I’m also interested on how they came to find that ERP helped with OCD, etc.

I think you’re right. It’s a combination of chemical and genetic factors, but I read an article that indicated up to 60% of people with OCD have PTSD. But that might also be the case with other mood or anxiety disorders.

Both. It depends on the person

Both for me. My mom has OCD so i have the genetics for it, but it came on after trauma.

I know it’s always been latent for me, but some repeated traumas in the last 7 years have really worsened it and brought it to the forefront. It’s interesting too, because my brother also has contamination OCD.

My first cousin has OCD but different themes. Our grandma is dead now but she possibly had OCD that was mistook for being very religious.. so I wonder if it’s genetic. My OCD flares bad whenever somebody passes away or whenever I’ve used cannabis..

@em887766 My shit started when I smoked weed. Bad experience probably trauma to some degree for me. And I had a great aunt who had ocd but was probably misunderstood as well

@Dre83 ****TW death/trauma************* I got over my first THC-induced ocd and dissociative flare just to have my friend shot in my neighborhood while I was outside at the time and I resorted to CBD oil to aid sleep.. and had my worst flare yet (that I’m still in).. and everyone says CBD isn’t psychoactive but I don’t believe that now

@em887766 Yeah I know there is so much miss information out there and is pushed to meet people’s agendas. Sorry to hear about your trauma. It’s so amazing how we all have stories. Just goes to show in my opinion that we are more alike than we realize.

@Dre83 I think our hardships makes us more understanding of people who suffer/have very misunderstood mental illnesses, etc. We connect. Crazy to think we’re all conscious beings that are more the same than different, even thought we feel completely apart🤍

It could be any of those reasons you listed and we won’t ever know which one caused it for us unfortunately
