I think that it can be genetic as well as situational! My dad also has OCD, but he didn’t develop it until later in his life. I developed my OCD at age 17. I have several friends from online OCD forums that are the only people in their families that have OCD

Yes, it can be. I recently read some studies saying ocd is basically either genetics or environment-based. Or it can be a combo of both. One other source I read tells that excoriation disorder (skin picking) is highly prevalent in people with ocd which causes some scientists and doctors to believe that ocd is highly linked to genetics. I hope this helps and you can google it too! :)

My brother & I have ocd, so I think is most probably genetic based.

My family us full of anxiety disorders. I think ocd is just an expression of it. Like it could present in phobias, can lead to panic attack. Others somatize with pain. But they all seem to work with the same or very similar strategies.

I think a lot of things come into play. Like others said I think it can be genetic and environmental, however there are studies showing that inflammation in patients with OCD is higher than the control group. Inflammation is regulated by your immune system and the majority of your immune system is regulated by your gut micro/myco biome. There have been studies with the microbiome and different mental health issues and there is a correlation with many of them. *Sorry if that is more information than you were looking for!*

Also, I apologize I should have put a possible trigger warning.

I don't know if there's been ways to know the cause and effect relation between those. There has to be some feedback wich is why meditation amd stress relief strategies work.

@formalino Don’t worry, that’s misinformation. There is no specific verifiable cause or origin to OCD. That’s why ERP works for some, while medication works for others, and at the same time meditation helping another.

@formalino I believe there is definitely bidirectional communication.

@Intrusive Thots There are tons of scientific studies on the matter.

@Anonymous Just as there’s tons of information stating otherwise.

@Intrusive Thots That for some people OCD could possibly be caused by inflammation? Can you share the information with me please because I would definitely like to read and see both sides.

@Anonymous Disregard. Literally the whole internet is inundated with articles stating there’s a link between inflammation and OCD. I’ve read hundreds of articles while dealing with my previous obsession, and not once did I come across anything about inflammation. Yet, a single search of trying to find contradicting evidence results in the former. If you search anything related to OCD without that specific keyword, you’ll find innumerable articles, none referring to inflammation of the brain. Doesn’t make sense to me though tbh, but I’ll have to read on it.

I've seen gut flora mentioned in fibromialgia where you also have different studies trying to explain it's cause. These disorders are all mental and i honestly feel it works with feedback.

@formalino So my brain has been inflamed since I was a child?

@Intrusive Thots I don't know i'm not deep into the fisiopatology of anxiety disorders, but i don't think its far fetched. Immune disorders are common in anxious people like alergies, skin eccema wich are inflamatory reactions.

@formalino Skin is deeply connected to the nervous system and it's misleading to treat the brain as a separate entity in the body, it's a whole.

My grandma had OCD. My mother has an anxiety disorder. I began having OCD symptoms and behaviors since age 8-10, so I guess it’s safe to say it could very well be genetic, well, at least for me.

Different expressions of anxiety. If you are human you'll express it in different ways.

@formalino Probably, but my grandmother literally had some of the obsessions I had, but I believe mine to be more severe, although the experience is entirely subjective.

Yeah i mean the anxiety feeling is in its core common. The panic in agoraphobia wich i haven't experienced, seem very similar to the panic i had when i had my first spike.

i don’t know, as far as i know no one else in my family has ocd? but then i don’t think there’s been a situation that caused ocd either
