@mobina If the psychiatrist told you that you have OCD then I’m sure that was an accurate diagnosis. Especially since they specialize in OCD then they know what symptoms to look for. I’m not even sure counselors are allowed to diagnosis.

@Lily F Counselors can diagnose, anyone with a clinical license can assess, diagnose and treat clients.

@.ketamine.kitten. In the U.S. I believe that psychiatrists and psychologists can diagnose. Therapist and counselors can refer you to the appropriate person if they suspect you may have OCD or something else.

@Bailey253 I'm a therapist (licensed clinical social worker/LCSW) and I am able to diagnose people, lol. Not to be argumentative. I rarely formally diagnose clients though, due to stigmas around various diagnoses. However with OCD I do typically diagnose because educating the client is helpful for them/their future providers, so they know what is most effective (ERP) and potentially harmful (traditional talk therapy).

@.ketamine.kitten. Interesting! I had to look that up. So it's really dependent on the degree and license in the ability to diagnois, Yes? I was referred by my counselor for OCD testing.

@Bailey253 Yep, that's exactly right! That makes sense, most of the therapist's job is focused on the individual rather than filling out codes for insurance, lol. That's the only other reason I diagnose.

I can relate! My first therapist literally told me "there's no medicine that will make you love your partner" before I was diagnosed with rOCD. Looking back on that and the time (wasted time honestly) I spent with other therapists was harmful. I spent more time trying to unpack my obsessions and make sense of them than approaching them in the most helpful way, BECAUSE my therapists were totally unfamiliar with OCD and it's various presentations. You're not alone. I would say trust the doc who was doing ERP with you. If the ERP was working, you know likely have OCD.

Uhhh, exactly, he was trying to make sense of my obsession, which is hurtful.

I finally found the courage to seek a psychiatrist last week, when I got there I was nervous for obvious reasons and felt a bit guilty. I met the doctor and don’t get me wrong he was very nice and knowledgeable in the bigger scope of mental health. Asked me questions of depression, anxiety, if I see things others don’t etc.. However, while we went through the assessment I did not receive a formal “diagnosis” and seemed as though he came to the determination what I have is general anxiety disorder. I don’t disagree, I know I have anxiety! However, when it came to the point where we were wrapping it up I had a “BUT WAIT” moment. I explained I was a part of an OCD community where I had previously been doing therapy to manage OCD. He asked “well why OCD?” I replied, “I have constant thoughts very repetitive thoughts that follow a theme and they are extremely persistent.” It was then I knew I couldn’t let down the walls and go into depth, as I knew he wouldn’t understand. To validate what I already knew, I said “I have constant fears and worries about my children, myself, and religion. I think about these things all day long. In order to free myself from the feeling I have to say a specific phrase or word in my head.” He said “well yea that’s normal to have worries and fears about your family, your religion” and so forth. The feeling of disappointment is an under statement, this is more than just “anxiety” this is something that I struggle with daily and to have a professional discredit my daily fight was off putting. Not his fault, it demonstrates the lack of knowledge for OCD and treatment many of us have to face. Sorry for the rant, sometimes we just have to advocate for ourselves.. 🌸

I’ve been struggling so much these past few weeks. I’ve been so anxious and just have had nonstop crazy, weird disgusting thoughts and idk anymore. Like I’m not diagnosed but I recently researched about it and it explained everything I’ve been experiencing like exactly. But I’m also very young so idk what’s happening I’m just so confused. I barely slept today cause the thoughts just wouldn’t stop. I have only told my dad about what’s been happening and he told me that he does want to help me and stuff and find someone that could help me but then I just feel like he dosent care, like when I talked to him about it about how I suspect I had it he just like completely changed the subject. But he did bring it up yesterday which was good i guess. And I’ve posted here before and people have been really nice and told me that just because I’m not diagnosed that doesn’t mean my experiences aren’t valid and I appreciated that a lot but I don’t know I just keep doubting everything. I’m also worried because my brother actually has OCD and ADHD and more stuff and I know how stressful it was for my parents to understand him and stuff and if I turn out to actually have OCD as well then I just feel like I’m going to be something else they have to worry about and stress about.
