Psychotic people dont know their psychotic. Its one of the hallmark parts of psychosis is that a psychotic person doesnt question it at all. They think everyone else is goinf mad and that theyre the sane ones

i’m not sure this is 100% true

@bigblue How come?

@bigblue Well makes sense, with ocd we doubt everything. But thats part of what makes schizophrenia and bipolar psychosis so disabling, is the lack of insight. Like a delusion for example is characterized by a false belief that is held onto so tightly because the person genuinely cant, not believe it

@AJDCTX12 i get that. i just know from first hand experience that sometimes people with psychotic symptoms are aware that something is not right. maybe you mean during a psychotic episode the person doesn’t know they’re having one? in that case, i could find some truth in that!

@bigblue Oh yeah! So yeah what i mean is that someone with psychosis def may realize something feels off, but when it comes to specific symptoms, a hallmark part of true psychosis is that they dont know their hallucinations or delusions arent real. Its one of the main things that makes OCD a nonpsychotic disorder is that we have insight, where as during full blown psychosis someone lacks insight. Like they may feel somethings off, but trying to tell them its psychosis is like talking to a wall. I've had two friends go through psychosis, and both def were terrified but they were terrified cus neither knew that their experiences weren't real. One friend genuinely believed her mind was being controlled by aliens, and the other (while she knew something was wrong) still couldnt not believe that 7 people werent in her head

@bigblue Just know its sometimes common for docs to misdiagnose ocd symptoms as psychosis cus most docs really dont know what ocd is. Like i was first misdisgnosed with bipolar with psychotic features, which made no sense

@AJDCTX12 So you can be aware of the symptoms?

@nayely🤍 Just making sure you heard all the other things about how being aware of the symptoms in psychosis is like the main thing that doesnt really happen

@nayely🤍 Its nothing bad its just with ocd we tend to latch on to the one single thing that confirms our fears and exclude everything else. So like often if we hear anything remotely close we hear that and almost tune out everything else. So like we said someone with psychosis may realize something feels off, but they cannot pinpoint it. They have no clue their delusions and hallucinations arent completely real. They think those specific symptoms are normal, and what everyone else sees. Which is the opposite of ocd

@AJDCTX12 Ahhh okay, so lets say i were to have a psychotic episode, would i be aware? Since i have a lot of knowledge on it

@nayely🤍 Nope. You may know somethings off, but you wouldnt know its psychosis, and if someone tried to tell you it was, you would be like "no way". Now its important to take this info and truly accept it tho cus with ocd we tend to doubt everything

@nayely🤍 A psychotic person can have all the info on psychosis possible, but their brain changes in such a way during it that all previously known info is essentially blocked during the time. Their thoughts and beliefs completely change. They may realize somethings off, but thats solely cus theyre terrified of what they think is real, such as feeling mind controlled or seeing people coming out of their walls. But besides being terrified of what they see, it generally takes others and antipsychotic medication before they can realize that this terrifying stuff isnt normal to see. Usually they are scared of it, but they never question if its real, like how we do with oce
