This is not psychosis. We can have OCD with “poor insight.” Basically this means that we struggle to recognize that the thoughts aren’t real. Plus OCD themes are usually more subtle, whereas someone with delusional disorder thinks very off the wall things like there are bugs crawling under their skin, people are living in their walls, FBI is following them, etc.

Btw I’m a therapist and am specialized in OCD

@CeePilk1 Is there a way to do that?

What happens when your OCD fears/obsessions are about very real, logical and grounded situations/events- but your reactions to them are what is heightened. For a lot of us contamination OCD folks, COVID really hit us so, so hard. I find it difficult to see how exposure therapy can help with something like this because exposing yourself to COVID (not directly, but being less "safe" or doing something that might result in it) could actually end up with someone fighting for their life in a hospital. How do we navigate?

@Anonymous There is no real certainty in life, we have to accept that. ERP for covid fears is to follow the cdc guidelines but to not add anything more.

I almost always believe in my thoughts, I'm not psychotic, I have OCD.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of therapists who claim they specialize in OCD, but when you ask them about ERP, they have no idea what it is or you mention a particular subtype and they have never heard of it. It sounds like that is what is going on with the counselor you saw. It makes me sad and angry that a therapist who supposedly cares ould try to take advantage of someone who 8s already suffering so much. My guess is it probably has to do with money. Most therapists do not receive training in OCD as part of their normal training. Also, ERP is a specialty most therapists don't have. So a therapist who claims to specialize in ERP and understand OCD can make a lot of money and will have no trouble getting clients. Therapists are not regulated. So that means that a therapist can basically lie and say the specialize in ERP and understand OCD when they really don't.

Not true, therapists are regulated by their professional board for the state that they work in. But if they are claiming false things you can make a complaint to the board.

@Maybe,MaybeNot Good to know.

There is also something called overvalued ideation, where you have a hard time to not believe in your thought, but it's still OCD.

Who called you delusional?

I believe my thoughts too. What does that mean?

I think the most of us do that when we are in the loop.

I’m confused. Who told you that you’re delusional and psychotic when you said in the next sentence that your therapist diagnosed you with OCD?
