As a discharged patient, I disagree with the claim of holistic treatment. Many people with an OCD diagnosis also strugglewith at least one other co occuring mental illness. My therapist was unable to address my generalized anxiety, she said, because, NOCD ONLY provides ERP. Holistic? You decide.... My feedback would be, that while I received considerable help for my OCD, I am as this article points out, a whole person, not my OCD. It seemed like a disconnect to not be able to help with the anxiety. Future clients would appreciate a TRULY holistic approach.
Thanks for the thoughtful response. Would you mind me asking who you saw for treatment? You are right- about 90% of people with OCD experience comorbid mental illnesses. Some common OCD comorbidities though are effectively managed by reducing OCD severity. Since OCD is an anxiety-spectrum disorder, it often leads to the development of clinically significant anxiety and depression in many people. Maybe your therapist miscommunicated to you, but by treating OCD with a focused intervention (ERP), data show that it also reduces comorbid anxiety and depression in many people. Most people with OCD, therefore, receive ERP treatment for OCD in order to treat their comorbid anxiety and depression. Therefore, to treat many people holistically, we often have to provide a focused intervention to the “root problem”- OCD. Does that make sense?
I have to say that my anxiety drastically decreased with doing ERP for OCD. There were SO many things my therapist has taught that has not only addressed my OCD but my anxiety as well. Sorry, you didn’t feel it helped with your anxiety, but as someone who has dealt with severe OCD and anxiety for 20+ years on my own and trying other therapy before I knew about ERP. This has hands down lead me to an incredible journey of healing. Thank you @gregoryscottclark for helping guide me to better places. @LCR5215 I certainly hope you find all the healing you can 💕
@NOCD Advocate - Stephen Smith Thank you, also, for taking time to reply, and clarify. Your reply, DOES match My experience. My therapist, Norma Jean Carrow, no longer works for NOCD, however, she helped me quite a lot. I am so grateful for NOCD. My quality of life is so much improved.
