I am in nursing school and we just went over schizophrenia which created some intense fear for me. I’ve always had a fear of this but now that I know more in depth about the illness it’s been an obsessive thought for me. I’m terrified I will hear voices or see hallucinations, to the point I’ve had some physical panic symptoms. Can anyone help with with this or share their story?
I don’t experience this exactly, but every time someone mentions sleep paralysis, I panic trying to sleep that night because I worry I’ll have my first episode that same night. I try to tell myself that I haven’t had it up to this point, so it’s unlikely that it’ll start just because I thought about it.
Hey! I developed this recently with the horrific stuff in the news about mom's and their children. My baby is 1 and i had my first panic attack 6 months ago and my brain is telling me that was a Psychosis episode and that it will happen again. I feel as if I am losing my mind. All I want to do is keep my baby safe. I start therapy today.
I’m a nurse! I am under 30 years old. My dad is actually schizophrenic and I went through this earlier in the year. The best thing that you can do for yourself is say “I may or may not have schizophrenia and I may never find out.”

@⋆⁺₊⋆mol⋆⁺₊⋆ This kind of stuff can be scary if you’re not already in ERP Therapy…but February me to now is a completely different person.
@⋆⁺₊⋆mol⋆⁺₊⋆ I am not in EPR and that does sound very scary for me lol. To me it’s like saying there’s a good possibility it could occur 😅
@Key080323 ERP therapy is a behavioral therapy that gradually exposes people to situations designed to provoke a person's obsessions in a safe environment. A hallmark of ERP is that is doesn't completely remove distressing situations and thoughts. For me, I don’t want to alarm anyone but I had a great fear of death earlier this year and had to give myself statements surrounding the possibility of it. It’s scary, but having a therapist to guide you through it is helpful.
@⋆⁺₊⋆mol⋆⁺₊⋆ I plan to try to get in contact with a therapist through the app soon so maybe we can discuss this, but yes the uncertainty is terrifying. It’s comforting to know someone else in healthcare has these thoughts. I knew as soon as we started the chapter I would experience severe anxiety from it and then we had to further complete simulation with “schizophrenic patients”. It’s manifested in my thoughts now unfortunately
@Key080323 Oh I can completely empathize with you regarding this. I was a mental health nurse in the psych ED + a hospice nurse + my fears latched on to each after I transitioned. Your brain loves to trick you, especially when you know things.
@⋆⁺₊⋆anomaly⋆⁺₊⋆ This really helped me. I’m a nurse at 29 years old. My dad and grandma both are schizophrenic. I started to mimic my dad’s symptoms after a big move I did this year and started a med that no longer worked for me anymore. It’s been a little over a month and I’m still recovering. It so hard though with thoughts of people following me, food is poisoned, and will I be like them. Though, I like to hear from someone similar to me. Thanks
@Anonymous I’m also 29, my dad and grandfather are dx schizophrenic and my dad has also attempted to die by suicide. I constantly worry that my food is poisoned or something is going to be poisoned. I had a brief issue with substance abuse and people I know were purposefully drugging people at the time and I carried that into my current ruminations. It’s hard, I still have to remind myself, stress can do so much to someone, it’s also nice to hear similar experience to me- though, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Happy to talk if you need someone to listen who knows that it’s difficult.
@⋆⁺₊⋆anomaly⋆⁺₊⋆ Yes my dad sadly died at 51. I hope yours is doing well. I just came up with the thought “what if food is poison” now I can’t stop repeating it. This has all become so debilitating sometimes I just think schizophrenia would be easier than this mental mind game. But, I also don’t wish myself or anyone schizophrenia or OCD. How can we connect? does anyone else have an intense fear of developing schizophrenia or psychosis. This has been a really heavy theme for me as well. I’m constantly checking to see if I have symptoms or if I’m gonna go crazy or develop these. it’s so scary.
Hi about a week ago I found out I have ocd and chronic anxiety! I tried zoloft and it was terrible for me. I also started therapy and I take hydroxyzine but I will discuss further medication with my doctor. My question is I have a huge fear that I'm going crazy, I am crazy, or schizophrenic to the point I'm so hyper aware of my surrounding ill look out the corner of my eye to make sure I'm nit seeing anything ill make sure to double check what I'm hearing and it's so draining! I get really scared and go into a panic and cry 😅 I need some reassurance has anyone felt this way my doctor and therapist explained it to me but I'm still very scared. I feel like one day I'll have a break and I won't be the same! I tried the grounding exercise and breathing it helps temporarily. I also cut out smoking weed and none of my family has this but I feel like I have it or ill develope it even though it's rare!
I have been having these fears about developing schizophrenia, it reached a point where i am starting to almost hear things or the smallest sounds and my mind tells me you're schizophrenic, and i feel this weird sensations in my ear as if someone is whispering yet i can barely hear them, the thing is i am not diagnosed yet because i never work with an OCD therapist but i study psychology so i just used what i learnt to give a meaning to my suffering, many themes of this fear have been happening before and this schizophrenia fear is the last one. I want to know what advice you can give me or ways to make my brain calm down a little bit, i also don't have and can't afford a therapist that's why i am here in the first place I also want to know more informations or experiences with this theme if anyone habe experienced it and what helped you with it I remember feeling better for a while but than i collapsed back, but i am hoping to get better soon too or anytime in the future, I don't want reassurance so make sure you be as real as you can, and thanks 🙏🏻
