Real Event OCD/Signs from God

Anyone deal with this? Uncertainty regarding an event in your past. You wonder was anyone hurt but you can never know for sure. Always fearing you are going to get in trouble one day. Then on top of that the thoughts regarding the event feel so real that you walk around defeated feeling like you are so bad and you should just tell everyone. Then the intrusive thoughts that make you fear the worst case scenario are always in your head all day everyday for a year. Then you start seeing confirmation/signs of your worst fear/intrusive thoughts everywhere that seem to confirm your fears. You start wondering is God trying to tell you something because every thing you watch, see, hear seems to point to or talk about what you’re obsessing about. Then because of the uncertainty you ask God to tell you what the outcome of the event was. Then all of a sudden you start seeing more signs of your theme and think is God confirming this. Then there are days where you get or see confirmation debunking your fear of worst case scenario and you wonder is God giving me signs in the other direction now.

There is a film called The Number 23 with Jim Carrey that is pretty appalling review wise but is relevant lol There is also the psychological tendency to filter your perception unconscious or not to see what you want to see and basically filter out the rest. People do it for cars. You see one red car, now you start spitting them everywhere. It's confirmation bias.

I’m glad you said this. I struggle with this all the blasted time. I’m always trying out how to discern God from my thoughts too. Remember, though, that God loves you more than you can imagine. God forgives without a second thought. God asks us to do His will, but knows you will fail, and is ready for you to try again by loving Him and those around you. Also remember that if we believe in God, we also have to acknowledge His opposite: the evil one. The evil one is just as capable as screwing with our minds as God is of sending us signs. For you, if this is a past event, I’d bet money it’s the devil screwing with you. It’s in the past, and God knows you can’t change it. Satan is likely trying to draw you away from God by making you feel guilty. We’re never going to be perfect. We will always strive to be who God wants us to be, but all He cares is the end is that we keep reaching out to Him. If you believe in the Christian God, here are some Bible verses: Philippians 4:6-7 Proverbs 16:3-4 (I interpret the last part, “even the wicked a day of disaster,” as saying that God will destroy the evils that torment you) Psalm 32:8 I will pray for your peace, my friend. It may not seem like it, but in the moments of desolation, God loves you deeply, truly, and infinitely. May He bring you the peace he longs for you to find in Him.

Genuine question, do you hear an entirely different voice in your head if/when he speaks to you?

@Grettzel I don’t know. It’s really hard to tell when He is and when he’s not. One thing that some wise people told me, however, is that God rarely “speaks” to us with a voice. It’s the easiest to discern, which I think is why we look for it, but we have to be careful not to accept every thought as directly from God.

@GHOST22 Your mind can screw with you like that too. If your mind is looking for the signs to the bad, even if you don’t want to find them, your eyes will see them.

@Bluebells I have to disagree. Obsessions are unwarranted but also intrusive. It's what separates them from hyperfocus/fixate. If your mind is looking, that's either verification, or something that is not obsession

Thank you. Yeah I’m a Christian. The thing about this obsession is that it makes me doubt my salvation. ( I’ve struggled with dinting my salvation for most of my life.) it comes a goes. Anyways this obsession takes all the joy out of my walk with God.

@Bluebells But I’d say that anything that makes you doubt your worth in the eyes of God is not worth listening to. One of the absolute truths we know as Christians is how much we, in all our brokenness, mean to Him.

‘Real event’ OCD? I don’t see much about this anywhere and was wondering if anyone else suffers with this? When I was younger I had contamination ocd and health anxiety. Now I’m 23 and obsess over something that actually happened. It’s killing me.

Anyone else struggle with real event type OCD (OCD latches on to a real life situation you’ve experienced)? How can we know the difference between what actually happened and if it’s just my OCD making me feel like a horrible person? Specifically with harm/pedophile OCD. Anyone ever experienced this before?
