Medication works really well for some people and it’s rather dangerous to discourage it, especially if OP feels as though he genuinely needs the help. OCD is a chemical imbalance and being healthy simply isn’t enough sometimes.

I tried that. I feel like a medication that works is my last hope along with talking therapies. My doctor has advised me to take these so that’s what I’ll do.

Even if it’s not alternative I think adding these elements to your overall medication would be beneficial .

Some people will still need medication. Some of us were born with neurochemical imbalances. I've had symptoms since I was 2. All those things are great, but they don't make medication unnecessary for everyone.

Similar experience - started to on 10mg of fluoxetine and ended up having a 3 day long panic attack + disassociation. I took a break for a few months and started on it again at 5 mg and worked my way up more slowly. Everyone is different, talk to your psychiatrist about your options.

I think medication can be great with the addition of ERP. I personally don't think being on medication long term is a good idea. We don't have a great understanding of SSRIs or even if serotonin is the main cause of our issues. Anti depressants are neurodegenerative so I imagine being on them for over 10 years probably isn't good for you unless you really can't function without medication.

This is completely false, SSRIs actually seem to increase neurogenesis in the hippocampus, though we haven't figured out exactly why.

@seekingvee I've heard the total opposite from reliable sources.

@hateocd123 It's just not true. It's not what the research says at all. SSRIs are not neurodegenerative. In fact, SSRIs are even associated with a delay in Alzheimer's progression in elderly patients. If research isn't a compulsion for you, I'm happy to send you info!

@seekingvee Research is one of my compulsions, and I would be happy to send you information stating otherwise :)

@hateocd123 Your info is outdated and incorrect, and you're scaring people away from potentially extremely helpful treatment based on misinformation.

@seekingvee No, it isn't, the studies I'm referring to are newer than the study you're referencing. I'm not scaring people away from anything, I said that SSRIs are really useful in conjunction with ERP. I don't think anyone here intends to stay on medication for the rest of their lives with no CBT and ERP, unless they really have to. Any medication in existence has potential negative side effects, that's a risk a lot of people choose to take so that they can improve their quality of life. I'm done here, have a good one.

I'm on a low dose lexapro for 1st time in my life ( 7 months now) my plan is taper off. I went through a huge event that left me feeling just awful. I practice meditation, exercise eating well. The important thing is to know we have control over situations. ✌❤I'm gathering more tools and knowledge. Everyone is different. If you need meds that's okay.

I take Luvox and it has changed my life. I used to be totally paralyzed by my ocd and now my symptoms are so manageable. It’s the first time in my life where intrusive thought aren’t making me feel suicidal. I’ve been on meds for over a year now and feeling great

Yeah. It didn’t work well for me however there’s lots of other medications. I’m waiting for my doctor to call me to discuss options now.

I’m not advising anyone to get off their medication, however I do believe the body know how’s to heal itself with right elements. OCD is a chemical imbalance, in which those balances, can be address through more naturally means.

My doc now put me on beta blockers and these feel good :) I may return to SSRI’s but it’ll probably be under hospital supervision.

I've been interested in beta blockers. Which one were you put on if you don't mind me asking?

@hateocd123 Propranolol. Feel really chilled. It dosent take the thoughts away however the bodies ‘fight or flight’ anxiety response is gone. Means your can be at peace with your condition a bit more and take advantage of CBT methods. The last 3 days of my life have been hell. I seriously thought I was going to die.

@hateocd123 Thankyou. I hope to get back on SSRI’s, maybe try Prozac or others, I know they’re going to deal with the OCD. Right now the propranolol is treating the symptoms of OCD, the anxiety response. I still have worries and doubts but the hyper ventilating and pacing and fake physical symptoms have gone. I like this medication.

@Cal2019 I've been prescribed celexa and buspirone, but I haven't taken them yet.

What does the medication exactly do?

Propranolol is a beta blocker and stops adrenaline reaching the heart which means the anxiety response which causes thoughts to ‘loop’ dissapears. Promethazine hydrochloride (marketed as Phenergan) is a tranquilliser so also calms anxiety but is better for night time as also helps you sleep and I need to be able to drive still.
