Tic disorders?

What kind of provider evaluates and treats tic or movement disorders tied in some way (not necessarily causal, but correlated) to OCD, trauma, or other mental/emotional distress? Some specific kind of psychiatrist? A neurologist? I tagged somatic and health themes for this post, but I'm not sure if either actually applies, or if this is an empirically separate set of symptoms for me--that's a question I would save for this kind of specialist, lol

I have conversion disorder, which cannot be treated medically. It would be a psychiatrist, but they'll give you medicines. More than likely, you'll be told medicines and therapy.

@🖤SavageGirl🖤 Right now, they're intermittent and I'd say moderate intensity. I hate that my eye and mouth kind of contort because that's super visible. My shoulder shrugs pretty intensely and that actually comes with pain too, but people don't point it out if I don't mention it myself.

@Bean.there - I contort when I'm anxious or angry. I completely understand the pain, I'm sorry to hear that. I have seizures because of the conversion disorder and have some kind of autoimmune disorder that effects my joints. Does anything make them better?

@🖤SavageGirl🖤 I had a couple of seizures in 2021 as well, which an epilepsy-specialized neurologist diagnosed as PNES's, and was not particularly knowledgeable or compassionate about it at the time. Inspired by this post, I've looped back around to some of my providers and had some very productive conversations. So thank you so much for responding and sharing! It helped me a lot. 💙 Physically, and in addition to the therapy and possibly meds you mention, light exercise like yoga, muscle relaxation and release with heating pads, massage, and/or stretching help a little with the pain and involuntary muscle contractions. Not a professional rec, just something I've found to help me.

@Bean.there-NOCD therapists can treat Tic Disorders along with OCD and treatment for both can be provided by the same therapist at the same time. You would see a psychiatrist if you feel medication would be something you want to try, but it is not mandatory by any means.

Thank you so much for the answer! I will ask my current therapists and psychiatrist about differentiating between tic disorders and conversion disorder (aka Functional Neurological Disorder or FND) so I know which type of provider to lean on for appropriate treatment. It's good to know that tic disorders can be treated by the same therapists as OCD. I would love to be able to centralize care as much as possible. Thanks!

OCD/Trauma/Depression

Hi everyone. I haven't posted on here in quite in some time. I'm hesitant to post but I'm battling some things that are compounding onto each other. I've had ocd since 15 I'm 30 now..I feel it's still there but much better than years ago. Currently though I'm really struggling with depression and trauma too. Atleast I believe it's trauma and my psychiatrist saw some indicators. Long story short I was in a relationship with a narcissist and I'm still recovering. I feel my nervous system is still kinda on fight or flight. I've learned that our bodies very much stores trauma. Alongside this I'm pretty critical of my appearance and my self esteem is not so great. I've been putting myself out there more and socializing but I can't shake this feeling of being stuck in an endless loop. It's hard to tell what to tackle. It's difficult for me..I don't know if ocd treatment is for me or more so trauma based therapy. I think there is some overlap..any advice or feedback would be appreciated. A side note I've done ERP in the past and I've been to treatment centers such as mclean. I feel like I need a community because I feel pretty alone but I'm having trouble putting one foot in front of the other.

OCD therapist versus not?

Hello! What a journey this ocd thing is! After 17 years with one therapist, I knew I was no longer making progress, so I changed to a new therapist. After just 6 months with her, she suggested I might have ocd and to look into getting diagnosed. She was right and I was diagnosed with ocd last summer. Meds are making a big difference but I still have lots of unlearning and re-learning to do. I’ve been struggling with whether or not to switch to a therapist who specializes in ocd. I have no issues with my current therapist, but she doesn’t specialize in ocd and I sometimes think I need someone who does specialize in it. But of course, I have Pure O, so I can think myself in circles til the cows come home. Can anyone share experience about switching to a therapist who specializes in ocd?

Psychiatrist

Therapist put it on the table that I should see a psychiatrist that she recommends. I felt relief because maybe the psychiatrist can tell me what's wrong and the plan going forward but im scared because what if my symptoms vanish or i miraculously get better (i doubt it) then what if i've been making a mountain of a mole hill. Or what if i dont know how to express myself. im obviously not scared of getting better, but i just don't want to seem like im making people scramble to treat me and then it turns out theres nothing wrong. like what if i don't have OCD and im just making all this stuff up in my head. what if i just want something to stress about
