Guilt over pirating

Basically I'm poor my family is poor it's rare to ever get games and so I do pirate all from big games like Pokemon and such but I do feel guilty as because I'm an artist I understand how much time and effort it takes to make a game and I'd def buy the game if I had the money but I still feel guilty especially because I know people say if you don't have the money just don't get it or spend time your time doing something else. Which I do I like drawing and making characters but I also feel like it's unfair to not allow poor people to play games just because we'll they poor

Right morals and ethics of doing what is legally and ethically correct has zero to do with what others do . Whether rich or poor doing what is morally and legally right should be adhered to .

Here is an example if a wealthy unfair person owns a store . I would be legally and morally wrong to take something from that store without paying for it regardless of circumstances. Personally I would do what is right no matter how wrong the other person is . Personally I try to have high standards and integrity.

The games industry is an industry defined by greed and exploitation. You are not cheating the programmers and designers by pirating games. The CEOs, shareholders, and moral arbiters outside of the industry are doing that to them. If you feel guilt, don’t. That is easier said than done with OCD, I am aware. And I can understand that you feel bad for stealing, and I won’t say it’s okay, but it IS a natural reaction to a system that excludes and exploits. At the end of the day, you’re not rioting in the streets, destroying livelihoods like so many others who feel aggrieved enough to respond however they see fit to when feeling cheated by an unfair system. You’re downloading overpriced games and shorting greedy millionaires a few bucks. Really nothing to lose sleep over.

Hey there! I don’t think you need to feel guilty at all, but I can understand why you might. I know some people have different takes on the matter, but personally I don’t think a multimillion dollar corporation will care haha. Games could be more affordable dependent on region/cost status (for example Hollow Knight is made more affordable for people in countries where the conversion rate in unfavorable to them against an American market)- but most are kept consistent just for corporations to receive higher profit margins. Overall just allow yourself to be uncomfortable with the thoughts and don’t feel the need to “fight” them or reassure yourself. Part of having OCD is being morally scrupulous and second guessing choices or wondering if you’ve made the “right” choice. The best we can do is just live our day to day and enjoy our lives the best that we can. Best of luck- the more you worry the worse it gets, so practice non-engagement and enjoy your game!

Read enshittification by Corey Doctorow or at least one of his interviews and I promise you, your perspective on pirating will completely change
