Let me ease your pain. I was in southeast Asia when the sars pandemic was born. At the time I was fearful of contracting the virus and had my very first panic attack in Bangkok Thailand looking back that was nearly 17 years ago. I was fearful of the virus when I landed back home in North America and obsessed about it constantly. Here’s the thing about the coronavirus that you need to understand and make sense of it ..so many people have underestimated or just don’t understand. The entire world right now is living in fear and it’s based on social media and the news and other forms of information that makes us as society completely fearful of what’s to come or what’s not to come. If you look at the sars pandemic just under 9000 people were diagnosed and in that 9000 There was a 10% mortality rate so nearly 900 people died that took place in eight months from the time of the first case in China , And sars disappeared never to be seen again! In comparison the coronavirus seems to be a lot worse for many reasons but here’s the true facts. Covid 19 Has infected over 92,000 people in just eight weeks but only has a mortality rate of 1 to 2%. That being said we have a death rate right now for 3200 people globally. If you think about it most of the people that have passed away are in China, the healthcare system there’s anything but the standards that we have in North America. These rooms are plum full with dozens if not hundreds of patients all side by side by side that end up coughing until they pass away. You also have to remember this at a 2% mortality rate even if 1 million people were to be diagnosed with the coronavirus that would still only be a death toll of 20 000people. If the rate continues on at roughly 100,000 people infected every eight weeks it would take another 64 weeks which is over a year to infect nearly 1,000,000 people on planet earth. I’m not saying that that’s not possible and in fact it could affect a lot more than that within the next year but at a 2% mortality over 1 million people within the next 64 weeks is still less actually far less people than a typical flu will kill in an annual year. If you Google how many people die of the common flu on an annual basis you’ll see a rate of nearly 60,000 people every year die from the flu.For this virus to kill 60,000 people it would have to infect over 3 million people on planet earth!!is that possible? Absolutely but even at a rate of double so let’s say 180,000 people every eight weeks if it were to get that bad would still take months and months to do. I don’t know who you are or how healthy you are but I can tell you this, you have a very low chance of getting the coronavirus and even if you do your chance of survival is 98 percent!! if you’re even remotely healthy at all. The people that passed away from these type of viruses are typically a little older with underlying health issues. The US government is dumping nearly $8.6 billion into fighting or figuring out a vaccine for this virus. In 2003 A Canadian pharmaceutical company was the first to find a vaccine for the sars virus. Once that happened and people started their vaccination process sars very soon disappeared and was to never be seen again. Technologies come along way since 2003 and I really don’t think it’s going to take that long for a pharmaceutical company to find a vaccine get something figured out, and this corona story is going to be old news within a very short period of time !!the only pandemic left in my opinion is the social media that every human pays too much attention to only to put fear in them that they need to stock up with tons of toilet paper that they’ll likely have in stock for years to come after this thing gets wiped away ,and never to be seen again! I hope this helps you ease some stress in your life.

Please stop blaming the media. It’s natural to react wi th some fear of the unknown, and frankly the entire world behaving a little more cautiously may slow it down. Washing hands is a novel idea for some people, but thankfully it’s a weak virus that does quickly when soap and water is applied. But people do have to use it. I have elderly family and if everyone being a little nervous (reasonably cautious, NOT panicky) keeps vulnerable populations safer, then I think we should all be a little nervous. That said, there’s cautious, and then there’s me who is considering not getting out of bed for the foreseeable future. So I am not a good example. But man can I wash my hands! :P

@Ceej The media really does blow it out of proportion if we’re all being honest with ourselves..

@I eat boys Well, maybe some media. I only read the NYTs these days, so I guess I can’t speak for whatever media you’re consuming. But I stand by the fact that we don’t know how bad it will get and it has potential to spread. I don’t know about your country, but mine is suffering some non-fact based leadership on this issue, and we don’t have universalized health care. Or even the ability to stay home from work sick without being penalized, forget plain old loss of wages. So it’s almost set up to increase spread as unchecked as possible. Cautious people who actually adequately wash their hands may be the best defense we have right now, and I have the media to thank for putting that on the forefront of people’s minds.

Thank you everyone so so much for your comments! This definitely will slow my ocd down. I’m not really panicky, my brain just “thinks” of corona like a broken record if that makes sense. I work in a store where they’re taking more health precautions which makes me a bit scared. Thanks again for all your info, everyone! :)

Yeah, precautions are good. And frankly, I would be happier to shop at a store that took precautions to protect employees and customers ?

Wash your hands for 20 seconds and you’ll be good. And also if you do it more than that and ocd is telling to do it more then it’s recommend and you hate the fact you have to do it more than 20 seconds just say fuck it. And stop cause you once you don’t give a fuck ocd will think it’s no more fun
