The best course of action is to take the medicine. Everyone’s experience is going to be different. If someone shares their experience, you will inevitably keep checking to see if yours matches it. Everyone responds to different medicines differently. Just work with your doctor or therapist and find what works best for you.

Thank you for responding! And I didn't realize that... That's a good way to put it before I get myself in trouble and start checking. Thank you!

Yes. I don't take any meds right now, but I have tried thrice before (at least). Citalopram I tried because I have anxiety, at the time though I was 15. Nearly all my aunts and a few of my cousins take it and it helps them greatly! I trusted that. But. Citalopram made me angry. And that was weird because never was I ever angry before. So I stopped taking it and tried sonething else that someone thought would work, was prescribed it, and it turned off my creativity. It didn't work out. You've gotta see for yourself if a medication works for you, cos every person's different. We're all unique! : )

my meds made my depression and anxiety a lot easier to manage. the thoughts haven't improved but it's nice to be able to focus on my ocd without having other unmanaged issues

Meds do affect everyone differently. I've tried ones that have helped others i know but had bad effects on me. I'm on one now that does seem to slow down the racing thoughts and anxiety to a degree. Meds can definitely help make it easier to manage, but sometimes it takes a while to find the right one. Still important to do the mental work though bc its definitely not a cure all! They're there to help, but we definitely still have to learn to better manage our thoughts

I had people suggest meds to me off and on for months. Finally a friend said, “You won’t know until you try.” I think it’s helpful to be curious—like you are—and view it more like an experiment. I also found it helpful not to read tons of articles on all the side effects, because then I would notice them in myself even if they weren’t actually there. So, I just waited until I noticed weird stuff and then Googled to make sure it was a side effect. (Do make sure you know about when to take it, as some can cause drowsiness, and what allergic reactions might look like.)

I take sertraline (Zoloft) and it didn’t work until I went up to 75mg. You’ll KNOW when it’s working. I’ve been working my way up to 75 for 3 months. SSRI is a slow long process if you haven’t taken them before. Go ahead and take the meds to get the process started! It’s not as scary as it seems.

Hey friends, I hope you all are well. I just wanted to check in and ask people's experiences about being on medication. I have had OCD pretty much my whole life, just got recently diagnosed 4 months ago and my therapist recommended that I get on meds for it so I have a psychiatrist appointment set up. I'm a little apprehensive about getting on them, but I've realized that I do have some sort of chemical imbalance in my brain that plays a part in my OCD and anxiety. I would love to hear anyones experiences or words of encouragement. Thank you, I hope you all are well.

This is kind of a weird question, but I recently increased my SSRI dosage and have experienced tremendous relief. It has quieted my intrusive thoughts so much and my compulsions are no longer as all-consuming. However, I don’t want to be on this high of a dosage forever and know that medication alone shouldn’t be my only fix. I’m seeing a new psychiatrist on Wednesday and am wondering if the recent decrease in frequency of my symptoms will be a bar to my getting ocd treatment? In other words, if in this present moment I’m doing better, but up until a few days ago my compulsions were taking up pretty much every moment of my waking day, will I still be classified as having ocd? I start getting worried when I feel better that I don’t actually have ocd and just use it as a defense mechanism to avoid consequences of my actions/I’m secretly a terrible person

Hi everyone, I’m 23 and have been on Zoloft since I was 16. For the past couple months I’ve been having panic attacks more and I’m sick of feeling like a zombie everyday. My boyfriend said I’m very sad and unhappy then when I first met him 2 years ago…. He thinks it’s the medicine. Throughout the years I have upped and lowered my medication, but now, I feel as though it’s not helping. Either it was too much where I didn’t feel emotions at all like very scary stuff or it wasn’t enough to help me. I was given 5mg of Lexapro to try…. I’m scared to take it. All I know is how Zoloft is. I don’t want to go crazy on it, be allergic to it, etc. I feel like I’m going to trip myself out when I take it and not actually feel the difference. I could really use some positive feedback I really just want to be a normal human😭
