There’s a philosophical debate about the ethics of meat eating vs. not. Personally, I’ve done both. I was vegan for about six years. I now intermittently eat meat, while also having vegan or vegetarian meals. Most of the debate seems to circle around the nature of personhood or sentience, and whether a conscious living thing, irrespective of species, has an intrinsic right to a natural life. I think there’s a compelling moral argument that eating meat isn’t ethically justifiable given our large scale access to food in the developed world. In developing nations where people exist off subsistence farming, I think it’s hard to tell them that going vegan is the ethical choice given their already limited nutritional options. I’ve felt great, physically, on either “diet”. My slow shift out of veganism started because of a shift in my professional life. I started traveling and it became untenable to eat a healthy vegan diet given the often limited options when you’re traveling. Does that mean that maybe I could be making a morally better choice? Sure. But any compassionate or adult reading of human nature doesn’t insist on moral perfection.

@Makki23 I can relate. I have mixed feelings about eating meat too. Do you know any vegans in your life (not including people online)?

@Makki23 I suppose like South Dakota, there aren't a lot of vegans in Kansas ☺. Keep in mind most people who come to the conclusion of becoming vegan still manage to live happily in the world. Even in slave-owning times, abolitionists still found a way to live in their communities and influence them. I suspect OCD is making this moral choice much heavier than it needs to be.

@Makki23 There's a very strong sustainability argument for simply eating less meat. What if you started there?

@Ben84 Maybe...what's the argument?

@Makki23 I gave answer, but then deleted it because you seem to be really struggling today. There's a time to discuss this issue, but today doesn't seem like a good time. OCD, rather than morality, seems to be driving the bus right now. You have less than one week till that appointment ☺. I believe in you!
