Hey there! It’s very common to have a relapse when coming off medication, ESPECIALLY if you weren’t in therapy working with an ocd specialist first to gain the skills and tools you need to manage these thoughts without meds. How fast did you come off of your meds? Sounds like you were on them for a very long time and protracted withdrawal is more common than people realize, especially if you’ve been on meds for more than 5 years. I’ve had a very similar experience as you (trying to come off meds before seeing an ocd specialist, having a huge relapse of an old theme, feeling worse off than before.) I also started seeing an ocd specialist and recovered from that theme. And I’d highly recommend you do too if you can because going 15 years without real treatment is just unfair to you. Sounds like very classic ocd to me and starting some erp would really help you. I’m so sorry you’re going through this right now, especially with everything going on in the world and the added pressure of being a parent. But you can do this! You just need some resources to help you.

Thanks appreciate your help 👍. Im doing cbt at the moment. I was taking 20mg a day then took it down to every other day day for a while and then stoped. Are you on medication ?

That is a very fast taper.. did you do that will the help of a psychiatrist or on your own? I would recommend going from 20 to 15 for a few weeks, then 10 for a few more, 5 for a few more. A proper taper takes time to avoid relapse. I got back on meds but then tapered down to a much lower dose than I was at previously. I’m currently at the smallest dose possible and staying there for awhile until I decide if I want to go completely off.

Yeah I had that too. Going back on doesn’t feel quite as good as starting out for the first time. Are you doing erp with an ocd specialist or are you well versed in doing erp on your own? That’s going to help you a lot while you readjust to your meds. You could temporarily go on a higher dose if your doctor approves and thinks it’s safe, just to help you get back to feeling better on meds.

It’s a bit hard to explain in a single comment. It’s much better to walk through it yourself with a specialist—it can be difficult to figure out how to do it right in your own. One resource for doing it on your own though if that’s not an option: https://iocdf.org/expert-opinions/expert-opinion-self-directed-erp/
