Many people with ocd actually start to obsess about their treatment. That’s very common! Your challenge: do treatment imperfectly! Stop ruminating about whether you did your exposures right or perfectly or long enough or with the right mindset or any of that. Do the homework and accept that you probably did some of it “wrong” and that’s okay. Stop reading so much about ocd. That’s also a compulsion. You’ve done your research clearly. Now is time to DO the treatment and STOP reading and researching about it.

Thank you! I have also noticed sometimes I can’t go a day without searching. Do you have any advice on me worrying of turning something into a compulsion?

@Ahmed77 Lean into the thing that makes you most anxious. If it’s doing the ERP homework: do the ERP homework. If it’s not doing enough ERP homework: take a break from it. If it’s doing it wrong in some way: do it that wrong way, at least once.

@pureolife Thankyou so much!

Yeah it does make sense. It’s a never ending ocd cycle. It seems like one of your compulsion is to ruminate. Maybe try sitting with these thoughts instead of trying to mentally figure them out.

I get worries if what if OCD recovery just becomes a compulsion for me. It’s crazy

It’s not crazy, it’s normal. Anything can become a compulsion with OCD which is why it’s important to take a position of observation and not attach to any one thought or fear. Maybe it is a compulsion, maybe it’s not. Focus on observing your thoughts, your anxieties and not trying to subside them.

I ruminate all day and sometimes feel like I can’t control it. I don’t know how to stop myself attaching fear to my thoughts. If i say ‘I don’t know to my thoughts’ I feel like I could turn that into a compulsion literally causing a never ending cycle

@Ahmed77 Have you tried ERP?

@Ahmed77 I get it. PureO is so challenging. It’s my main theme as well. There is a way to break the cycle

@annano Yes but I’m going have my first session with a therapist next week. I feel like I’m doing ERP all the time to be honest. I’ve struggled with Harm,sexual orientation and all. I was dealing with it fine until this obsessing about if I’m recovering right and wondering if I’m doing a compulsion which has happened now.

@Ahmed77 Yeah I struggle with the same thing. Im glad you’re starting next week! Be honest and know it’s okay to share these things with them, they will be able to guide you towards an effective treatment plan.

@annano Good luck on your journey! It feels a bit better to know I’m not alone and we can all fight together

@Ahmed77 Just know you haven’t been doing ERP. You have been living with OCD and that is HARD but ERP has hopefulness in it whereas just living with it often doesn’t. Things are going to be brighter for you wo the treatment!!!
