Do you wanna talk? I feel like I can relate to your experience very well. I was on Prozac for 3 years so I might be able to provide some perspective for you
Yes please Thankyou so much. My OCD is basically telling me that if I seek help that it will be used against me in years from now. I’ve had people look down on me for the idea of therapy and it’s all getting to my head. My depression got so bad that I litterally cannot even get out of bed. How much has Prozac improved your OCD and do you suggest anything?
@FruitLoop Firstly, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with seeking help. We have legitimate mental diseases and no one has the right to make us feel less than because of that. I’ve dealt with people who do that even in my own family. They don’t really understand mental illness at all, even those who suffer from it themselves! My stepdad constantly criticizes me for being on meds but he’s horribly depressed himself but he doesn’t seek help for it. But that’s not me. Depression is a disease that I suffer from. It’s not something I use an excuse. I choose to get help for it and there’s nothing wrong with that. And there’s nothing wrong with you seeking help either. My situation with SSRIs is a bit complex. I’ve been on quite a few, including Prozac. But I found out last year that even though I’m not bipolar, I am prone to episodes of mania if I’m only on antidepressants without mood stabilizers. So in order to be on SSRIs, I need to be on a mood stabilizer too so I don’t go into mania and start acting dangerously aggressively. Zoloft, Paxil, and Lexapro all activated my aggression and it was scary. Prozac, however, did not which is interesting because of all the SSRIs, Prozac is actually the most activating. But for some reason I rarely had anger problems while on Prozac. The problem though was that Prozac did activate my anxiety at times. However, I would say that out of all the medications I’ve been on, Prozac was the closest I came to feeling relief from my OCD and depression. I got up to 60 mg and my old psychiatrist said that if we pushed it to 80-100 mg I would feel substantial relief from OCD, but I switched doctors before he could push the dose that high cause I wasn’t convinced it would make any difference. So I never did get a chance to see if 80-100 mg of Prozac would have helped me feel better. And I guess I never will. My new psychiatrist doesn’t have me on SSRIs now because of the negative history I’ve had with them. I’m on Nortriptyline, which is a tricyclic antidepressant, a completely different drug class. He’s not sure I have OCD to be honest so we are using the Nortriptyline to target depression, but anything that increases serotonin can help OCD too so this might still be helpful. Also, if you’re having problems with low energy, maybe ask your psychiatrist to try a low grade stimulant. I started taking Vyvanse today cause we are trying to rule out ADHD and the Vyvanse did indeed increase my energy level like I wanted to. So I’d inquire about that but your doctor probably won’t prescribe you a stimulant unless he/she thinks you might have ADHD. OCD can sometimes be confused with or comorbid with ADHD so that might be something to look into. I hope that helps.
Thankyou so much for responding and I really appreciate your advice. I’m thinking of just going ahead with the therapy and using my medication along with guided ERP from a specialist. I really wish the stigma didn’t exist but I admire how you continued to get help despite the opposition. My family also has tons of anxiety issues yet none of them believe that therapy is the answer. I wish you the best on your journey w this and I hope that the Vyvanse helps ease your problems. I also have been accused of using my depression as an excuse but it’s just because they don’t understand how deep and strong it feels. I hope both our families research more and learn someday the truth. I definitely have ADHD as well but never went to seek a diagnosis so I will look into that and hopefully find a route that solves my issues. Again, I appreciate you taking your time to comment and this really helped me make decisions for my future!! :))
