My new psychiatrist thinks I have Borderline Personality Disorder and a little ADHD, both of which can be confused with OCD. I’ve been diagnosed with OCD most of my life but this new guy thinks it was a misdiagnosis. The problem is that impulsive and compulsive behaviors can look very similar, but the truth of it is thaf impulsivity is exclusively Borderline Personality and ADHD, while compulsivity is specifically related to OCD. I always thought my behaviors were more compulsive but now I think looking at them as impulsive makes more sense. Plus, I’ve been on medications for over six years that were meant to target OCD symptoms and nothing ever worked. So it’s really important to look at your problematic behaviors and distinguish between impulsivity and compulsivity. That will help you reach the correct diagnosis.

I have bpd traits and didnt really have issues with impulsivity thatcould be confused with ocd. My psychiatrist that has been working on me for bpd traits and depression pretty succesfully resently diagnosed me with ocd too. It all started a year ago with harm ocd and pocd. My main compulsion currently is checking my pulse to assess anxiety (if I am Not anxious then its Not ocd). Idk if bpd traits could do that. My impulsive behavior is evident in rare bulimic episodes and some hypersexuality when I was younger. Also anger. I have intrusive thoughts about my relationships that make me research exessively but I put it down to bpd and Not ocd and unlikely have rocd. My main concern is if harm ocd and pocd symptoms can be misdiagnosed as ocd.

Also my medication is helping a lot with these themes but I still can get angry and have occasional intrusive thoughts about my relationship or partner but I chalk it down to bpd.

I don’t think you have actual themes with BPD. Although I guess in a general sense the themes would be mistrusting or doubting your partner (e.g. thinking they’re out to get you) and feeling fearful that they may leave or abandon you.

Yeah Ive had this occasionally and I can't help feeling this way but I am able to kind of separate from the feeling and ground myself in reality which is that we are all human and make mistakes or Sometimes don't act in each other's Best interest. Was that your issue misdiagnosed as ocd? Ive gotten a bit more insecure lately doubting Sometimes if my partner is attracted to me but I can very easily move on because its overshadowed by the ocd worries. The irony. Both suck tbh.

No that was always properly diagnosed as BPD. I had other “compulsive” behaviors that were always thought to be OCD but were not.

@ma345 Hey care to talk more about your compulsions?

I got diagnosed with ADHD personally, and where I did relate to some symptoms, inattention, restlessnes etc. I found I resignate more with OCD, specially Pure O with intrusive thoughts, obsessions and mental compulsions. I've always been a worrier and thinker, but I knew it wasn't general anxiety and was something more, because its been fears of things highly unlikely. I think its imprintant to realise that some conditions will overlap, everyone can slip into every category probably with a symptom or 2. If YOU feel that OCD resignages and is causing your distress, focus on working on this for your own peace of mind, all the best☺

Worth noting that when my mind is less sticky, obsessive and fearful, I don't have as many issues with concentration etc, which is why I feel like my stress and anxiety can display as ADHD like symptoms. Perhaps I fit into both equally, probably another thing best just leaving to uncertainty and working on what is holding you back first and foremost!

@jemm I feel tha same way. Unless I am either of these things I can concentrate Just fine

@🖤 Yeah totally. I think a label is important to an extent, but I got too caught up on labels myself, and fearful of what could be. No human fits into any condition "perfectly" you know, I'm sure we all share little bits of everything, even people that function best. Genuinely believe its just another area for OCD to latch onto and stress you about. Identify your emotional difficulty and behaviours, and target them I'd say try your best not to overthink it. I hope this is helpful!

It sounds like you have BOTH BPD and OCD in my opinion.

I don't have enough bpd traits to be diagnosed but have had immense improvement from years of therapy. I will always be more irritable, emotional etc and therapy can't change my make up but Ive modified my behavior a lot. Ocd has cropped up with the recent pandemic.

Which is certainly possible

Do you impulsively act on urges to hurt yourself?

Yes I used to cut for 3 years but Not Often. Which is domething I no longer do.

Its also interesting that even though I Get intrusive urges or feelings rather than thoughts about my partner I don't consider it ocd. I think its the bpd traits honestly. With pocd and harm ocd its very very different

@🖤 What type(s) of therapy did you receive?
- Date posted

@ma345 I avoided dbt and only recieved cbt and meds for my Mood disorder as it was my main issue. I am sure dbt would have worked better though so I am planning on buying a workbook. After 4 years of cbt though I can tell you I am feelings much less unworthy, broken, Hurt etc It sucks that this pandemic trigger ocd for me (we suspect my dad has also Mild ocd so its genetic). A year ago I never in a million years thought I would ever struggle with this or even knew it could take all these forms.

@🖤 I’ve been trying to get DBT to work for years lol. Well a lot of it is my fault cause I don’t look doing therapy hw assignments.

@ma345 I honestly Just want to be less Hurt about small things. I can half the time rationalize and move on now but damn if I didnt wish I was normal and didnt get easily defensive or Hurt. On the bright side there are things that would annoy normal people too and they don't faze me in terms of relationships (I rarely Get jealous and when I do I don't lash out). So u guess cbt and life experience for the win. Dbt is like mindfulness right?

@🖤 Lol it’s funny you say that cause my therapist’s answer to everything the last two weeks has been “apply your mindfulness skills!!” Gets annoying when he throws the same thing at you every time. But no there are four sections to DBT: Mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness

If you feel like your current treatment is helping you, I would stick with it and trust your psychiatrist. If he or she has already considered both BPD and OCD, it sounds like he/she knows how to properly assess and diagnose. One more thing to rule out though might be ADHD. People with ADHD can be impulsive and angry too. But other than that, it sounds like you and your doctor have covered all your bases.

I would say adhd is unlikely. I have issues with memory and concentration only when I am depressed or with the ocd. Usually I was able to focus quite well with no issues.

@🖤 So stick with the two original diagnoses then. You should be fine.

@ma345 There are no FDA approved meds for BPD so focus on using meds for OCD and if you’ve already received CBT with lots of success, maybe try DBT to regulate your emotions better and gain some impulse control.

@ma345 I think cbt gave me a lot of impulse control actually. I no longer struggle with impulsivity except from binge eating occasionally. I rarely drink (Not even full on drunk) and never really do drugs. I control my anger quite there although it annoys me that its even there and my bf wouldnt even guess I have had strong bpd traits in the past. Im proud honestly. Hope you also find something that works for you. I am sure with full blown bpd its going to be much more Difficult.

@ma345 Would you say that bpd Might be Often misdiagnosed as relationship ocd if there are no other themes in the sufferer? I don't know how the other themes could be misdiagnosed as ocd when in fact being bpd/adhd etc
- Date posted
- 4y
@🖤 I’m honestly not familiar with relationship ocd cause I’ve never dealt with it, but I do know that severe trust issues and constantly doubting that your partner loves you and may leave or abandon you are all signature traits of Borderline.
