Hi, I hope you’re doing well! I know everything must feel overwhelming right now, but remember that ocd is very creative and can make fears feel real. Even though it’s hard, the best thing to do is to sit with the thoughts until they pass. How have you been managing with the worry?

I try my best to say that’s it’s not true and put the fear aside but it keeps coming back up... everytime I do I have a panic attack.. I know this is the weird question but is it normal to have this thoughts and feel like you have to do them? (Which I wouldn’t but could it be true)

@Mmj97 I also try to clean, cook, shower, volunteer and try my best to give love to my partner but it just triggers me when the thought comes up..

@Mmj97 This is classic ocd! The fear of hurting someone you love is the obsession, and the other actions that you’ve been doing such as denying thoughts, cleaning, doing nice things, etc. are compulsions. The reason why the thoughts keep popping up is because you’re engaging in compulsions in order to relieve your anxiety momentarily. Many people can relate to what you’re describing! I have obsessions surrounding harm as well. Have you ever tried ERP to treat your ocd?

@Mmj97 I’m so glad I could help you feel better :) I totally understand that feeling btw, however a psychologist who understands ocd and who knows how to use erp does not judge patients about any obsessions or compulsions! They know it’s a disorder and they know it’s anxiety inducing. I really recommend trying out erp because it’s the gold standard treatment for ocd!!

It's normal because it's something you fear....it's your brain's way of keeping you safe, creating the anxiety to activate the sympathetic nervous system and getting you to run away from the perceived danger. Those of us with OCD have a faulty safety system which keeps activating when there is no 'real' danger present. The danger is created by our imagination and the thought of doing things which are against our values (fears). It's normal and I believe people without OCD have these thoughts also but dismiss them as they have no fears relating to the thought. I've been suffering with OCD for 30 years and only recently become educated in it all. It sucks....it can feel as though the world is ending when triggered!

Thank you for sharing your experience...I’m constantly questioning who I am. I wasn’t diagnosed with ocd but I believe I built it due to my anxiety problems and during quarantine. I feel like the worst person ever and like you said as if the world is ending and I should be locked up for this type of stuff. Any advice or tips on how to not let it get to me?

I'm exactly the same - ocd is an anxiety disorder, very closely related to GAD. All I'd say is that if you were really a horrible person then you wouldn't be feeling pain and on an anxiety / ocd forum sharing experiences that are very similar to millions of other good people. You have to deal with the anxiety first, otherwise when in sympathetic nervous system mode your frontal lobes doesn't work as it should, you cannot problem solve and you engage in flight or fight. Obviously you can't fight or flight from an intrusive thought, you have to deal with the anxiety first through 7/11 breathing or getting up and doing something to refrain rumination and overthinking from happening. You need to get back to the parasympathetic nervous system. When triggered you brain catastophizes to keep you safe, but there's no real tangible threat. Just keep in mind that normal people have these exact thoughts it just doesn't affect them like it does us - people with anxiety issues.

When back in control your frontal lobes regenerate and then you realise how silly the whole scenario was. I'm a recent dad to two little ones, it's been very difficult with lockdown too and holding down a quite demanding job.....just remember there will be better days ahead. I've had every theme possible at one stage or other.....hold on to your values. Have you looked at thought action fusion?

I pour a glass of water and sit next to my wife watching tv, I think about pouring the water over her. Out of all the times I've done this never once have I picked up the glass and poured it over her......practice this it will help you realise thought action fusion isn't a thing!!
