Hi Mary, As someone who struggles with religious OCD I just want you to know that you aren’t not alone. OCD attacks what we value the most which is why it’s attacking your faith. OCD can latch onto anything which is why so many people suffer from various themes. Remember what you have is an OCD problem not a religious one. I know just how painful it can feel when OCD attacks your values. But you can choose to not care ( it’s always hard at first, but it gets easier with practice.) I recommend checking a few YouTube channels: Restored minds ( a great resource the guy actually recovered from religious ocd himself) and Ali Greymond ( she is amazing and has a whole section dedicated to religious OCD.) I’m Muslim so I remind myself to always choose faith not fear. I choose faith because I believe that God is greater than my scariest ocd thoughts, and he knows I have OCD. Don’t let fear guide the way, let faith. Let that propel you forward towards recovery.
Thank you. I think I might be taking too big steps. Maybe I need to slow down on the exposures. I just honestly feel like giving up on my faith because then I wouldn't be in exposure all the time. My trouble is I don't know mentally how to react to exposures.
I'm Muslim tooo and i have that same type of OCD, many Islamic specialists said that if you're OCD type is religion that means you're religious bc it attacks the most valuable thing in your life
@Mary Hinchliffe Hmm I understand where you are coming from. Maybe you should talk to your therapist about that and ask if you can do smaller exposures until you respond to those correctly. Also ask your therapist what’s the correct way to react to those thoughts.
@shahd Mostafa Yes, that true! I even heard a Hadith saying it was a clear sign of faith. May Allah heal us from this and strengthen us against it! I also recommend watching Ali Greymond on YouTube she’s been really helpful in my recovery process Alhamdullilah
@Anonymous I heard that hadith too but my uncertainty still makes me afraid even though i usually take Quran and hadith and never be uncertain abou anything was said.. I will watch her thank you, may Allah help us ❤️❤️🙏
@shahd Mostafa Yes for sure. But doesn't that mean if we gave up religion, then the OCD would calm down? It's such a miserable disorder 😭
@mayaaa Yes. I hope I will be able to explain it all properly. The thing is, my therapist doesn't give me exposures to do, they're all self led.
@Mary Hinchliffe At all, faith comes from inside if the heart your fears and thoughts are not what you believe, for my when i have the thought I'm 100% sure it wasn't my thought but later i get anxious for it and i also have backdoor spike so you're right it's a mess but god knows what's in your heart and he will never bunish you for something you just thought about... Keep that in mind ❤️
