not here to reassure you, but just realize that guilt is the essence of feeling like you did something that doesn't align with you morally - meaning, you have good morals. your mistakes don't change that. what helps me when i'm going off on the "what if" tangent is i start making up crazy scenarios to go with whatever i'm worrying about to make me realize how distorted my view of the event was. hope this helps :)

(for example) "i regret that i bullied someone & i'm afraid they'll confront me" - proceed with "and then they'll confront me and space lasers will come down and wipe me off the face of the earth!"

@anonymous thank you. i have so many regrets about showing my friend my sh scars, i saw a tik tok and people were saying “if you do this youre disgusting and attention seeking” but i know i didn’t want attention, i wanted help, but definitely shouldn’t have showed them and i regret it. i never meant to hurt anyone and my ocd is saying i am horrible and what if i am secretly evil and it’s so painful. but thank you for helping me see that, this was a long time ago, but of course my ocd won’t let it go. :(

@hope my rule of thumb is that there is no reason to whatever your ocd is making you worry about. even if there is, the actual threat or danger is severely distorted by your ocd. the more time you spend trying to rationalize it or reassure yourself the worse the ocd will hit you. if you can look at it as a tv in the background of a bar that you don't really pay attention to - but that you don't avoid. by recognizing that it's there yet still going on with your life you're able to control the feelings associated with it. if you can take the feelings out of the situation, you can begin to reconstruct the thought with a therapist. it's not perfect, but it helps you tolerate your thoughts a little better.

@anonymous also... tiktok is not real life. the internet is a harsh and critical place full of triggers for ocd. people are quick to jump to conclusions about others' actions - but it's counterintuitive because you can never be "correct" or "woke" enough to satisfy the critical nature of the internet. people are quick to judge what they don't understand or experience. they say what they think is right and invalidate anyone with a different opinion. you can't limit yourself to what other people say, especially on the internet, even in your worst fears.

@anonymous thank you!!! you’re so right, i needed that reminder because for the last 24 hours i’ve been going back to this tik tok and reading all the harsh comments and feeling even more guilty. i know these people don’t know me or my intent, i guess my ocd just attached to it because it was something to obsess over. thank you for being so kind and helping :) it means a lot!!
