Ugh I HATE fricken supernatural and spiritual stuff. My OCD loves to cling on to superstitions even if I personally don’t believe in them AT ALL! I have to actively avoid anything related to horoscopes or my OCD will mess with me about anything I accidentally read. I don’t believe in ghosts or demons anymore, but I definitely did as a child and teenager. If you’re raised Christian pretty much everyone believes in actual demons roaming the earth. 😒 The best way to deal with scary OCD thoughts is to turn towards them and sit with the fear. Become comfortable with the fear. Tell yourself “maybe I AM possessed by a demon. Maybe there are three demons standing in front of me right now.” And then let yourself feel all of the things that idea brings you. Argue with the OCD in your favor if it wants you to do a compulsion, like lighting sage or praying. “What’s the worst that’ll happen if I don’t do that right now? A demon appears and gives me a heart attack? The demon scratches me? If that happens I’m pretty sure I’ll have time to start chanting a prayer.” Remind your OCD of the facts. If demons are real, you are way more powerful than they are. You have a body and a spirit and a mind and a heart. You’re not going to be taken over so easily by some dumb movie poltergeist. If you did somehow have a demon possessing you, I bet you’d manage to get rid of it. Or become best friends with it. Or ignore it until it got bored and flew away. Whatever happens, you’ll be okay. It’s okay to be afraid of terrifying things like that. If it happened, you’d be afraid, but you are strong and capable and you’d be able to handle whatever came your way.

thank you so much, you’re so right about arguing ocd in ur favor and the power of just sitting wirh uncomfortability. it’s crazy how i know it’s ridiculous, but i also feel like i MUST do my compulsions “just in case” 😭it makes me so frustrated like knowing it’s silly but your ocd is still screaming at you. thank you for being so understanding and kind!! :)

@hope OMG I FEEL YOU SO MUCH ON THAT ONE!! It took me probably 10 years of not believing in Christianity anymore to be able to actually say the words out loud. OCD was like, “well, it’s probably not real, but just in case it IS, I might as well pretend for the rest of my life so I don’t go to hell”. OCD totally had me convinced that it was worth it, just in case. I think it’s totally reasonable for you to do the compulsion, just in case. Like, lighting sage for a few minutes is a lot easier than potentially getting possessed by a supernatural entity. Try to keep yourself from doing the compulsion as long as you can, if you can. Tell your OCD that you’ll cleanse the room in a minute, so it’s okay to sit with the potential danger now. Try to go longer and longer without doing the thing OCD thinks you need to do. OCD might ease up on you a bit if it knows you’re gonna do the compulsion at the end of everything and let you explore that anxiety a bit more
