I got prescribed 10mg of lexapro but I’m so scared of taking them because I’m afraid that it will cause me bad side effects or cause me depersonalization. Can someone give me advice? I’m afraid and dont know if I should take it. I’m so scared that I decided to split the pills to 5mg to start then increase to 10
I’m a little surprised your doc didn’t suggest having you start with 5 and then move to 10, but that could just be what my doctor thought was best for me. I can tell you my lexapro helps me tremendously. I can also tell you that lexapro for OCD is often stepped up quite a bit more than for depression. So once you try it, your dose might be managed, or if it’s not working for you, it might be stepped back down and stopped. To fight any reassurance-seeking, maybe say something like, “This meditation may work for me, or it may not. I will stay in contact with my doctor, and he or she will help me manage it.”
I was surprised about him prescribing 10mg ar first as well so I’m just afraid it will cause me a lot of issues like insomnia / panic attacks etc that’s why I don’t want to to take it
@Redrose It is really helpful for my intrusive thoughts while not causing anxiety, actually helping me calm that, and it doesn’t add to my insomnia, but I know what you mean because it can act differently as you first start to take it or step up doses. It might be best to talk with a psychiatrist or therapist who is more familiar with it than a general practicioner, but if your GP felt comfortable prescribing it, you can absolutely discuss your concerns about it with her or him too, especially if you don’t have a therapist in place yet.
Were you prescribed this medication by a professional who has worked with OCD before? If so, I would follow their instructions and try taking the pills as instructed. Make sure you have a couple trusted people in your life who know that you are starting a new med, and even stay with them if you can (for your own safety, if that is a concern!). If things go well, great! If they don’t (and that’s okay; it often takes multiple attempts to find the best medication and amount), then contact your medical professional and let them know you need to try something else. I was scared when I first started meds too, but they have honestly been a game-changer and I am so thankful. Take a deep breath and know you’re not alone! We’re all here for you!
I got prescribed the medication by my family doctor when my anxiety was super high and I went into the office crying about a health scare that turned out to be nothing! But the problem is I can control my anxiety I don’t have panic attacks and I don’t know if I’m depressed or not but it’s just my scary / intrusive thoughts that make me anxious / scared and becwu see of of those reasons I don’t know if it’s worth it to get on medication because what if it prolongs the problem and I just need therapy more to get my brain on track if that makes sense! I’m very scared from the medication :(
@Redrose Ahh, yes if the medication is giving you more anxiety than helping, definitely let your doctor know! And if you can, try to start therapy either here on this app or with an experienced therapist wherever you are. That will definitely be good, no matter if you use medication someday or not!

Hi everyone, I’m 23 and have been on Zoloft since I was 16. For the past couple months I’ve been having panic attacks more and I’m sick of feeling like a zombie everyday. My boyfriend said I’m very sad and unhappy then when I first met him 2 years ago…. He thinks it’s the medicine. Throughout the years I have upped and lowered my medication, but now, I feel as though it’s not helping. Either it was too much where I didn’t feel emotions at all like very scary stuff or it wasn’t enough to help me. I was given 5mg of Lexapro to try…. I’m scared to take it. All I know is how Zoloft is. I don’t want to go crazy on it, be allergic to it, etc. I feel like I’m going to trip myself out when I take it and not actually feel the difference. I could really use some positive feedback I really just want to be a normal human😭
For starters I was on this medicine before i remember the first few weeks were very scary and debilitating. I don’t remember why I stopped taking it , it was about 7 months ago. but I just recently started back because my ocd and anxiety has been off the chain. I keep having bad thoughts about the side affects and I’m terrified like “ what if I have a seizure” can anybody share an experience? Anyone on Zoloft here. Thanks !
So I have been diagnosed with GAD and OCD and my psychiatrist prescribed me with zoloft 🤔 but I dont know im really hesitant to start medication because im scared of the side effects and ik afraid of relying on a medication for a long time. Does anyone else take zoloft? What is it like? Any side effects?
