Yes, that's a compulsion. The more you look stuff up and ruminate, the deeper you will get into HOCD and the harder it will be to get out of it. Trust me, I did all the things I shouldn't have.
I’m sorry to hear you are dealing with some HOCD compulsions of researching. The more we do compulsions, the deeper we get stuck in the OCD spiral. Also using non-engagement techniques when intrusive thoughts come up can be very helpful to lessen the need for compulsions. You got this!
