Anyone have issues with repeating sounds over and over that bothers them? I feel I have some sort of unique form of OCD or mental illness. I know this is not the case but I can’t help but to think it. Any help or insight would be appreciated

Repeat sounds? That you hear in your head? Or external sounds?
@jerseyrich @jerseyrich Hearing in my own head like the same as visualization but for audio imagery. Any external sound I hear I internalize afterwards too and repeat . For example: If I heard a song on the radio ? It’ll be in my head and repeating it long after song is over on radio . Or an ambulance siren, things like that just get repeated in my head and I can’t escape it . It is almost automatic .
@Mike0310 I go thru the exact same thing with songs. I'll hear a sing I like. Usually from years ago. It will play on repeat for a few days. Which doesn't bother me. But than it goes into day 3. Day 4. Maybe a few weeks. Than it starts to freak me out. Even though I love the song. It's the constant repeating. Makes me worried. But eventually it dissipates. OCD makes our thoughts repetitive and sounds too. All the same thing. The sounds are a form of thought. Once OCD figures out what gives a person fear and anxiety it goes on repeat. Sadly.
@jerseyrich What a pain! This is great insight though and I appreciate it. I have also noticed when I am multitasking at work or under stress at home it will play in the background of my thoughts , almost like an anxious response. And when there’s a full blown panic attack ? It is uncontrollable. At least the severity of these earworms is an indicator of my stress levels and signals I need to change or address something.
When I say it will play on repeat I mean in my mind.

How are you how? I currently have like a sound stuck in my head and I’ll get anxious about it it’s so weird ..
@Lilly2442! I would say same amount but less intense due to my increasing ability to just “ let it be”. Last night I played some musical instruments such as bass and harmonica. I repeated the songs/ sounds in my head over and over and couldn’t stop it. I am starting to think this is self inflicted and I compulsively replay things to soothe internal anxiety . Whether it be intrusive thoughts or mental compulsions, I just have to “ let it be “
@Mike0310 I’m currently struggling with sounds. It makes me anxious every time I hear a sound because I become stuck on it like I can hear it in my head untill the next sound pops up it’s so weird.
@Lilly2442! Hyperawareness and ruminating on it makes it worse I noticed . When I let it sit there my mind naturally gets bored and gravitates towards something else. I am starting to get the hang of it. Not out of the woods yet but my mental compulsions tend to dissipate when just not caring and giving up. So ironic right ? Surrendering to it actually gives it less power.
@Mike0310 Yeah when this happens do you get the anxiety feeling ? Like you hear the sound it gets stuck and then boom anxiety comes and makes it worse I have a fear of schizophrenia so it just makes me think I’m gonna go crazy because of it
@Lilly2442! Yes. When the anxiety comes I then repeat it even more . I don’t know why. I then get the “omg this will last forever “ … it never does. If you can convince yourself it is 100 percent going to pass regardless of how awful it feels it will give you a sense of calm . Also I have had the severe fear of schizophrenia and still do. Being too hyperaware of thoughts you can’t control really makes you fear the worst. Non obsessive minds don’t feel the need to monitor and analyze every single automatic thought that comes into their heads. OCS is called the “ doubting “ disease “ for a reason !

@Lilly2442! Going through it last few days where I am repeating and or recreating sounds in my mind . Noticing this intensifies around work stress . Also got a bit anxious last night over my tinnitus. Just very hyperaware at the moment and repeating . I
@Mike0310 Same. I notice it does get better when I don’t focus in on it but if I focus in on it it gets louder.
@Mike0310 The anxiety it causes tho is so so strong and causes so much discomfort I feel like I’m going insane or this is a sign of “schizo” and I feel impending doom with it
@Lilly2442! Me too or I get this inability to sit still/restless feeling. Therapist today says it’s a compulsive way for me to self soothe or “ drown “ out my true fears . It makes sense . I just am suprised it is so involuntary
@Mike0310 Yes Omg I feel like I can’t sit with it. When it happens tho it causes automatic anxiety. I know you said you have a fear of schizophrenia and this is where the stuck noise started to scare me and I noticed it more cause of this theme
How do you mange the schizo theme? I’m constantly scanning and checking to make sure I’m not hearing things. I also because of the checking made my ears so hypersensitive/ hyperaware and it causes me tinnitus :(
@Lilly2442! I managed this theme by exposing myself directly to research videos online that were documenting real schizophrenia and their symptoms . It is very uncomfortable as it is exposing you to the worst fear. I did this with my erp therapist and you can do it yourself too once comfortable . Once you realize that even if you did get schizophrenia? ( very very low probability ) there is modern medicine and therapy to help you live a very impactful life . It begins to become stilly and your mind becomes bored when exposed long enough. It’s that fear of something not being real or a hallucination that scares us .. because we wouldn’t be in control right? The need for control is what drives the doubt and fear .

Also I find peace in the fact is also rare a schizophrenic would even be fearful of going insane and know they are going psychotic. There would be delusions and hallucinations at play that would give a schizophrenic sufferer much lower insight in what’s happening to them.

@Lilly2442! Still there. Been using unstuck app to really identify if my thoughts / sounds are intrusive or if I am compulsively repeating the thoughts/sounds to myself . The app called this issue we have as “ repetitive thought chanting”…which is the constant repeating of the thought to try and quell the anxiety , but really just makes it worse. The app is teaching me how to resist repeating the ear worms ( songs , sirens, movie quotes , etc ) . Although I have a level of discomfort now, it feels good knowing that this is just OCD and not something rare .
@Mike0310 Yeah same! Have you spoke to your therapist about this? If so what do they say about the stuck noise? I’m currently struggling so bad:( I’m so hyper fixated on it.
@Lilly2442! The more importance you give it the more it becomes stuck basically is what therapist tells me. It’s a compulsion that we do to ourselves . Similar to songs that gets stuck in people’s heads , but the ocd brain fixates on it.

It causes so much anxiety for me and sometimes it leads to me having a panic attack
I’ve had many types of OCD, but I gained control over them over the years, but a new one has started to arise. Do y’all ever have scary thoughts about something you might do? Recently I’ll get extremely uncomfortable no matter where I am because I can’t stop thinking about “what if I screamed really loud in my lecture class tomorrow?” And other stupid stuff like that. Also, this one is kind of funny, but sometimes when I use the bathroom I pause before because I think “what if I’m actually in class right now?” I also cannot control the thoughts about past embarrassing moments. I know everyone does, but I will become visibly uncomfortable and harp on something from years ago. This happens all throughout the day. Also, does anyone else do things that resemble tics when you get these thoughts. Like when they happen I’ll curse under my breath or like jerk my head a little bit. When I’m in public I keep it low key but when I’m alone sometimes I’ll physically get up and pace or something when those thoughts happen. Just curious if anyone has had these experiences
for the past few years i have been struggling with a certain theme of ocd as well as most of the other themes. but this one i have not figured out a good way to do my own form of erp or non-engaging responses. basically i will be daydreaming or thinking and have a very random thought. i wouldn’t call these thoughts intrusive thoughts because it’s not necessarily fear of the thoughts coming true, its just fear that my thoughts are too unique. my ocd will latch on to random or weird thoughts and may also add in that i was doing something weird while doing the thought. let’s say for example i thought of something random while i was rubbing my feet. then my ocd would be like “why are u having such a unique thought while doing something weird? nobody has ever thought about that specific thought while rubbing their feet before” (just an example). but basically it’s like my ocd bullies me for having thoughts that are too random and things i’ve never heard people talk about before if that makes sense. i am just trying to see if anyone relates even a little and how i can accept that everyone has unique thoughts.
Hello everyone. I often get the feeling that I will go crazy or in a state of permanent suffering. The thought is very persistent and I think is OCD repeating that disturbing thought. If anyone feels the same way. What do you do about it?
