Hi, I’m Liam and I just got diagnosed with OCD/Harm OCD and it’s been really difficult. Does anyone have any advice or tips for being new at this?
Hi, I’m Liam and I just got diagnosed with OCD/Harm OCD and it’s been really difficult. Does anyone have any advice or tips for being new at this?
Hi Liam, I also struggle with Harm OCD, and number one you’re doing amazing by reaching out for help even if it doesn’t seem like it. With OCD harm it’s remembering to give yourself some self compassion and grace. From my experience it tends to feel very urgent and necessary even when it’s not. So remember ti give yourself some grace
@Anonymous Thank you so much, I really appreciate it and am so thankful that I am not alone.
Please reach out if you want someone to talk to I definitely understand. Also take care of yourself in between because it is important. You are important!
@Anonymous Thank you :), I may reach out just to talk to someone else with it but again, thank you so much. Just very hard with it being new and all.
Of course!! And it is really hard. And I’m so sorry it is something you’re also struggling with. Just know that it’s not who you are, or your values. It’s a way of control, but you also have power and control
@Anonymous Do you have any advice on sleeping? Sleeping is one of the hardest things to do right now as when it gets quiet, the thoughts get louder since it’s so quiet and everyone is winding down
Hellow Liam, I'm Titania, I also struggle with harm ocd, harm OCD sometimes feels real even though it's not, but because it's accompanied by panic, it feels like that, umm I don't know if this will affect you or not, but when I feel a flare up, I just sit and do abdominal breathing, or just move my body🙇🏻♀️you you can try if you want, you'll be okayy 🫂 don't feel alone yeah, we're here with you Liam!
@T.028._ Thank you, I appreciate it. I also try and move around because it helps a little. I definitely feel anxiety when it affects me but thank you, I truly appreciate all the support
@Parthxus Yeahh Liam, yeup anxiety will participate in it🙇🏻♀️🙌🏻 it's hard but you'll always be okay😺
@T.028._ I just got home from hospitalization for it and it’s a little anxiety inducing as I have trouble sleeping lately due to harm OCD. Got any advice for getting to sleep?
@Parthxus Ahhh yaaaa, you can listen to white noise sounds on youTube or rain sounds, usually I do that, and I blink my eyes many times to get sleepy🙇🏻♀️
@T.028._ Thank you so much! That I will definitely try and do. You’re very helpful :)
@Parthxus I'm glad you found this helpful, don't worry I'm here 🥹🙌🏻
@T.028._ Thank you :,) just been very difficult as this stuff is really really new for me and very scary
For sleeping I personally do take sleep meds because mine ten times also get rough at night. But before I was on meds I watch a tv show and constantly having a pre sleep routine. Or have a podcast going on so it doesn’t feel like you’re just in your mind
@Anonymous Thank you, I take sleeping meds as well. I just needed some advice as well so thank you so much. Just a bit difficult right now but again, thank you :)
@Parthxus Ur welcome 🤗
The best thing I’ve done is work on pre sleep routine. Honestly making things a routine has helped immensely and tends to make me feel a bit safer mentally before sleeping. So that could be a routine hot or cold drink before bed. A show you watch that’s not super intense that’s more lighthearted. Maybe a friend you chat too and then you begin to sort of remind yourself that you are safe
@Anonymous Thank you, I will definitely try that! Never thoughts of a routine but i definitely will try! Thank you :,)
Yah for me personally my ocd hates uncertainty. So I realized not having a night routine would make things a lot worse at night
@Anonymous That’s pretty much how mine is, it doesn’t like uncertainty so that’s why it’s a struggle at night haha.
I do understand how scary it can be so please know you’re not alone.
@Anonymous Thank you, truly. You all have been so supportive and that calms me down a lot, especially when there is a light at the end of the tunnel
Yesss mine is the exact same uncertainty is not my friend. But I do believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. And I wouldn’t say I never experience it anymore I still do but as time moves on you do discover more tools to not engage with it as much
@Anonymous Thank you for the help. Is it normal to be shaky / have so much anxiety due to this? My leg is so sore due to my shaking haha.
It really is I was recently diagnosed about three months ago and did a partial hospitalization program and intensive outpatient for 90 days and now I’m 4 different therapies right now so I definitely get it, it can be overwhelming and all time consuming
@Anonymous But know that I’m always here to talk if you need too. And if you ever want to talk outside of this too for extra support let me know.
@Anonymous Thank you so much. I’m trying to get therapy and into a 30 day inpatient private place to get help so..I really want help and to get better. I want to know if I’m doing the right thing getting this help
I believe you are. My OCD constantly making me question if I’m making the right choice as well getting help. It makes me question whether it’s worth it. But know it is worth it. Know you are worth it. This OCD isn’t allowed to get the final say
@Anonymous Thank you, truly. I appreciate all the answers you give me and such. It’s definitely calmed me down a bunch, especially knowing I’m not alone in this
@Parthxus Of course, anytime! You hold so much power, and the best tool I’ve ever been told is that everything is information. What is it telling us and what do we need to do for ourselves. If harm is getting loud that means we need to take a step back and take some precautions. Text a friend or anyone. Turn on a show, turn on a light. I have a hot or cold drink or change of environment. Honestly this is my secret tip and I know it sounds crazy but a McDonald’s Diet Coke or sprite is honesty the best for when you’re really stuck. The drinks are so carbonated it’s a great sensory shock if you drink sodas
As well as it gives you a change of scenery to get there, it’s more of a lengthy disruption
@Anonymous I see, I will continue to do my best to get better and better. Thank you really, I’m really really trying to
You’re doing amazing! Allow yourself to be proud and compassionate because you’re doing the work
@Anonymous I will, I will absolutely do my best to continue to give myself credit. I just know I’m wanting help for this
@Parthxus I know this might be a long shot but I’d love to support you in anyway I can, do you have discord or anything by chance?
@Parthxus No problem at all! I added you
Ok so personally i have experience the same thing. It could be because of my high dose of meds but my leg gets Shaky like it needs to move. My hands are also super shaky a lot of the time lol so I don’t know if this is a universal experience or not
@Anonymous Oh gotcha, don’t worry! I’m just anxious too so my leg moves a lot up and down
Yah part of my leg shaking is I feel out of control and anxious and then it starts going but I do own a lot of fidget toys for this reason, I’ve found it’s really helpful
@Anonymous I’ll keep that in mind as well! It’s a good idea to have those. You guys have been really helpful with this OCD stuff so I thank you, truly
@Parthxus Just being so new at it is so difficult
