Getting Scared Meds Prevent You From Being You

I don't know anything about medication and if they can have that effect, but I think your ability to function should come first. Maybe talk about this to your therapist and psychiatrist and if they think meds are still necessary I would say to trust their input even if your brain tells you that you're hiding behind medication or anything like that because it's likely an ocd trick as well. For example, I'm not on medication and I'm scared to get on it because my brain tells me the opposite scenario, that once my anxiety will go down from the medication I will see the truth I'm trying to deny. I feel like ocd twists everything in its favor. Maybe medication can make you feel like you're not really being yourself but I don't know if it can prevent you from actually knowing yourself. But again, I'm not a professional, so I think it would be best to bring it up in therapy.

I’ve actually had an old coworker (who had formerly been admitted into a psychiatric hospital) who stated that she stopped taking meds due to how they were making her feel. She said she didn’t feel like herself. Maybe taking medication isn’t you suppressing yourself, but just you coping? I was on sertraline and got off when I felt it was time, but I never thought “wow, am I suppressing myself?”. So thanks for sharing. That’s a new perspective that I’ll be thinking about.

The way I think about medication and OCD is that is without it is extremely heightened, all the medication does is calms us down and slows us down that’s it. our medication can’t “create” thoughts for us it’s purely our imagination and how much we allow it to flow etc. If when you were tapering the medication you realized you weren’t ready to lower the dosage that’s okay, your brain might me just pushing back and like the other comment said you should speak about it with the professionals too. ocd will pick on whatever it can
