Just let it pass through and say “Maybe I will do this thing/like this” or respond in that way. I know it’s hard to do and seems counterintuitive, but acknowledging the thought and letting it be will make it pass.

@Staystrong❤ I would never EVER do it though but the thought or image in my head feels so real and it's terrifying

But I will try it. It doesn't mean anything about me though right?

@Staystrong❤ Do you have an ocd therapist? Because I also don’t want to give you bad advice if you haven’t started erp. But not every thought has value unless you give it value. Therapy teaches us to accept uncertainty and mindfulness. That these thoughts could mean something about us or not and to just acknowledge the presence of our thoughts regardless of the content.

@OvercomingOCD I don't have a therapist but I don't want to be about what my thoughts consist of at all

@Staystrong❤ Trust me I get it. I don’t want to do, like, or be involved with any of the stuff that’s in my head. But the more you resist the thoughts the more they will linger. Even when you accept uncertainty/do erp you will still have bothersome thoughts but the goal is just to accept the thoughts and let them pass. They don’t have to mean something about you or your identity but who knows? That’s the attitude that allows you to recover.

@Staystrong❤ Please try to seek out a therapist. ERP is very hard to try on your own and it’s hard when you have really personal questions to ask. A therapist helps yo track your compulsions and face your fears.

@OvercomingOCD I would but there's some stuff in the way of getting therapy. Maybe one day though

@OvercomingOCD What do you mean who knows? I know for sure it doesn't make me something I'm not right? That's what I fear most. So I guess you mean that I have to agree with my fear for it to go away? I don't want to agree to it

@Staystrong❤ You aren’t agreeing with the content of your thoughts but instead trying to agree with the presence of them. And what I meant by who knows is that in order to accept uncertainty, be with the discomfort, and ultimately conquer your thoughts is to say “maybe these thoughts are meaningful, maybe they aren’t.” Trying to prove/disprove is a compulsion and something that won’t work because you will never accept the answer that your mind gives you and the cycle continues to occur. The thoughts won’t necessarily go away but you can change the relationship you have with them. For example let’s say you are sitting on a bus, how do you know that it won’t crash? You trust that it won’t but maybe it will. I know that’s scary to accept but the more you let fear dominate your brain the more the thoughts will continue to bother you.

@OvercomingOCD I totally understand what you mean and I will try that. I'm going to look into getting some help too. Thank you 😇
