Of course confessing makes it feel better: it’s a compulsion! And when we’re having an ocd spike, compulsions are the things we do to get rid of the anxiety and uncertainty. The problem is, you can’t/won’t recover using compulsions. You have to stop doing things to make the guilt go away or resolve your uncertainty. Instead, you have to learn to handle the distress! I know that sounds impossible and at first it will feel very scary, but the more you practice this, the easier it will get. This may take weeks to months of consistent work to see progress, but without doing the work, it won’t get better. If you’re working with an ocd specialist, they can help you with this erp and make sure you’re properly resisting other compulsions as well.

@BubbaBoo12 I definitely need to address it with my therapists and see how it goes. It’s just hard because some days are good and some days are bad.

@BubbaBoo12 Something doesn’t have to be torturing you 24/7 for it to be “bad enough” to tell your therapist. The more open and honest you are about all of yo ur symptoms, the better they can help you. Is your therapist an ocd specialist?

@pureolife I know you’re right. Not quite sure if they are an ocd specialist but I know she’s worked with a lot of ocd patients!

@BubbaBoo12 That could be why it’s not working. I previously saw a normal therapist and she made the ocd worse

@BubbaBoo12 Is she using ERP? If she’s not super comfortable guiding you through ERP when you have mental compulsions (specifically!) she’s not a good fit for this issue. That’s where a specialist will be key.

Did you tell your therapist this?

No I haven’t but I need to

@BubbaBoo12 Yeah you should. It’s important to be honest with your therapist and tell them how you’re feeling etc . They can’t help if they don’t know

I feel the same way in my treatment too sometimes. It can be so hard even when after engaging. I actually have cheating OCD too and it is by far the worst theme I’ve had yet. You are definetly not alone.

Thank you so much! Are your themes similar?

@BubbaBoo12 You’re welcome. Some are similar and they have all started counter acting with each other. It’s a nightmare. My other themes are doing things until it feels just right (repeating, touching, changing things, etc) and my other one is confessing to my boyfriend, I literally feel guilty about everything I do and have done in the past and have to confess.
